I live in BC and an Ontario dealer is charging me 7% PST on top of the 5% GST. I asked for his BC tax registration#, said he does not have one only an HST registration#, Says that they are required to collect the 7% anyway. I feel this is fraudulent and they cannot charge the PST unless they are a registered submitter. Who do I report this to?

Start with your MPP office. They should be able to shed some light on it. Kudo's to you for standing up and questioning the charge. Some people would have paid.

I'm concerned that thousands of others have already paid, or will pay. This is a fairly large volume dealer. I don't know how long they have been doing this for as this was my first purchase from them. If they have been doing this a number of years the extra they have been pocketing could amount to many thousands of dollars.

If they're a national registered corp I believe they have to submit provincial sales tax in each povince, though they would have to be very large to do as such. Otherwise they are only required to collect only federal sales tax outside their province.
When you say they are pocketing the money, I highly doubt that as they ar probably unknowingly forwarding it to the gov.
They probably didn't change their tax table back to 5% gst after the referendum on the hst in bc.

Alan might be right about them not changing it as BC did use HST before. Even if they had to submit provincial tax in each province he would have to be registered and provide you with his PST #. His HST # only covers him in the HST provinces. Since he doesn't have a PST # for BC and he saying he is charging 7% PST he must be pocketing it as there is no way for him to remit the taxes to BC without the #, his HST/GST # only works for remitting to the CRA. You are in the right for sure. I would contact CRA under business inquires phone # as he is using his GST/HST # to get more then he should as well as contact whoever is in charge of PST remittance in BC as they are not getting there money and he is collecting it. If this was a small time seller I would say its just a simple mistake, inform them and make sure they change it for the future but a large seller would be taking alot of money from alot of people.

After you ask him for the company PST number and it is not provided then you can report it to the BC Sales Tax Authorities in Victoria. The form of a Tax number for BC is currently an 8 digit number like 1067-1877 after 2013 , older numbers are like 1756634 (7 digits) if the company was an older business. It is possible that it could a business with offices in BC in which case they are required to collect it and submit it to Victoria. To anyone on here no matter where you buy coins or other goods through the mail or otherwise always get a legible receipt with the Companies GST/ HST number as well as the PST number on the invoice. If they are not prepared to do this then they are Tax Dodging at the least and cheating the rest of us , both buyers and sellers. Just best to not deal with anyone like that who is cheating the system.

Besides Colonial Acres and Canadian Coin & Currency, I am not aware of any large volume coin dealer from Ontario. I bought coins from them before and they charge PST & GST for total of 12%. And that was years ago. Never bought from them again. I believe the Shopping Channel is a national registered corporation

A re-seller is not required to show his PST number on an invoice. The GST/HST number is a requirement by the Federal government. Call the BC PST office and they should be able to tell you if the re-seller should be collecting. Be aware that governments sometimes expect you to submit the PST (on the honour system) when you purchase goods out of province and bring them into the province.
