It's been some time since I posted a coin, I have been buying but have been involved in other coin related projects to get around to posting them. So I figured I should at least post one. The coin is an AR Drachm of the Sasanian King Peroz I 459-484 AD. Peroz was the 18th king of the dynasty AR Drachm King Peroz facing right Fire Altar with attendants AS mint which is an unspecified mint. 28mm X 4.12g X 3h Gobl III/1

An excellent example, Ron, of the basic prototype for the derivatives that Finn has been treating us to. A new pickup - or one you've had for a while?

Thanks Bob, picked this one up a while back. I would love to get a hold of some of the earlier kings, Ardashir and Shapur but they are pricey.

Quote: picked this one up a while back. . Nice pick-up Ron. I've gotten a couple recently as well. One of my favorite aspects is that while the basic design stays the same, the various rulers can all be distinguished by the shape of the headdress.

Thanks, this series is one of the easiest to identify by the headdress and fire altar. The difficult part for me at least are the mint marks and dates. Dave do you have a copy of Gobl? If not they are cheap and you should get one.

No Gobl yet, but he's on my list of numismatic literature to acquire.

You know I approve Is this your first Peroz I drachm? I really like the style of the attendants on yours... much more realistic faces than mine have! Do your attendants have beaded necklaces? I'm not sure why, but it took me a while to put two and two together and figure out that Peroz was the last Shah to rule during what the West calls Classical Antiquity. Interesting that right when the remnants of Rome were crumbling, Peroz lost two major wars that severely jeopardized the future of his empire. He was also a close friend and ally of Eastern emperor Leo I, who lent a significant amount of money to pay his ransom to the Hephthalites.

One attendant looks like he has ornamental breast plate the other is worn. Actually this is my first Peroz, it took me a while to find one I liked.
