I thought about trying doing some metal detecting around home and wondering where would be some good spots to look for?

There are a couple of old schoolhouses on the corners or some of the townships yet... possibly around some of those?

Also, Ft Recovery is about 5 minutes away and the Wabash River is nearby. http://www.fortrecovery.org/history.htm
Would going along the sides of the river be worth it?
Or just going around field and such?
Almost everything around is farm land. How deep should the detector be able to go?

I'm sure I am not the first one in this area to go huntin... but with that history, it's hard to say what could turn up.

I am really new at all of this and just unsure of what to do. ANy experts out there that could help me out?

Thanks.

Hi Jordan

The places that you mentioned are all good areas to look, Be careful and check local ordinances , your own yard is another good place to look, I took over 100 coins from my yard, dating from 1913 to the mid eighties, 15 silver coins.

The depth that a detector will reach depends on a few factors such as the composition of the soil your detecting in the amount of discrimination being set on the detector, air temp and humidity can also effect depth.

The main thing is to get out and practice with your detector, the more you hunt the better you will get at picking locations, and finding the good stuff!!

Scan the plowed fields for any debris, broken poyyery, glass etc. This would be a sign of an old home site.
