Just got another box of cents for this month. The first was an absolute bust, a few LWC's but Nada of anything noteworthy. This one gleaned these:

Surprise-Finds,-Terrible-Revelations/Observations

First zinc planchet and second clip found CRH. The revelation was, glad I pulled most of my "collectable" LMC's from circulation in 2013 and 2014. From what I've been experiencing the zincs are deteriorating (rotting) very rapidly, see this of 2017:

In past year, I've noticed less and less copper cents in the mix, those that remain for the most part are in rough shape. In this pix, this was just aboult all in my box noteworthy of saving if you were trying to fill some holes...really poor...4 years ago it would have bee double the date/mm and higher grade coins:

I guess that with people hoarding cents for the copper, and introduction of BILLIONS entering the stream each year, this is to be expected. For new CRHer's, there's still some nice coins out there, just may take a bit to find 'em! Take heart if you're in the Midwest, just first of June I dumped over 5000 "clean" copper and @3700 "clean" zincs back into the pond...GOOD LUCK!

Or you can buy some of my BU's...

My theory regarding deteriorating zinc cents is that it's caused as much, if not more, by handling/abuse rather than composition.

I would venture to say that if Lincoln cents had always been copper-plated zinc, they would have held up a lot better even into the '80s because they had more buying power and people handled coins with more respect because of that.

Today, cents, nickels, and dimes are mostly an afterthought and end up being dropped and it's not "worth it" to even bend over and pick it back up. Then, no one else bothers either and they get stepped on, run over, buried, etc.

The zinc rot of modern cents is more a symptom of abuse/neglect than anything else.

That's pretty vague, jbuck.

I think I know what you are thinking...

I disagree, 1943 LWC. I think it is the composition of the metal more so than the handling.

Can we have a picture of the reverse of the clip? I'm not seeing much of the Blakesley effect.

John1 - agree 100%. Zinc cents are garbage quality. They tarnish very quickly, not due to abuse or mishandling, but to being a lesser quality product.

When it comes to circulating the Zincolns, I have no poker face. My feelings are clear.
