Hi,
I found this in my garden and I am trying to find out what it is.
It looks like it could be a coin, but we only cleaned it lightly to get the garden dirt off it.
We didn't want to damage it by cleaning too much.

It is 2.5cms (=1 inch) wide
1mm (=.039 inch) thick
7grams (=.25 ounce) weight

Any advice on who I could bring/send it to or how/whether I should clean it would be helpful.

I am in Nova Scotia, Canada

Unfortunately, there is no detail showing on the "coin" and there are well over 100 coins that fit that weight and size description.

I'm not sure you could damage it at all if you just scrub off what you can so it can be identified.
Unknown it may have zero value.
But if it was identified, it might have some value.

So far this coin - like object has no value at all, because it cannot be identified.
Like most ancient coins that are recovered from burial, some risky cleaning techniques are required. Worth taking risk because no value so far.

Unlike some ancient coins, this object still should still have a strong metallic center.

I would suggest vigorous scrubbing with an old toothbrush. A common cleaning first step with ancient coins, which on some occasions, can turn out to be quite valuable.

and it's too far gone to tell what it is and can't be damaged any more than it already is.

So yes, I would give a tooth brush a try.

Try a strong magnet first.
Brass, copper, gold or silver won't stick.
If it does stick then the chances of it being a real good coin are low.

Ancient coins are cleaned by soaking them in olive oil--it certainly can't hurt in this case! If a toothbrush can't get the dirt off, soak it overnight in regular over the counter hydrogen peroxide, then put it in a small sealed jar of olive oil and check back in a few months.
