Going blind via searching through a billion cents.
Found some odd coins.
This is my first post!
Any opinions on what caused the mess this coin is in?
Thanks.

Lot of fine damage, possibly sand or similar abrasive to give it a roughened look. The smashing of the 8, and underneath of the letters is circular, probably a coin counter/sorter or coin roll crimper. The latter, note dings along coat too!

I agree. The obverse looks damaged by a rolling/sorting machine.

Thanks for clearing this up.
Is such a coin worthless? $0.02 at least?

@Oznjerz, first welcome to CCF. Second, common date circulated wheat cents do carry a small premium, although normally folks are buying these in bulk (by the roll).

Not worthless, but likely no one will buy a singular wheatie at a time, as Spence said. If you could collect 49 more of those, you could sell it for about $2-$3.
Rest in Peace

Simple circulation damage. Common date wheaties are worth 3 cents each (retail) for bags of them. The exception being high grade red examples, which can get to a much higher value, but it's rare to find them in bulk lots.
Rest in Peace

Below average circulated wheatie took a few hits on obverse . Value - one & a Half Cents . Keep searching , there's nice ones out there .
