Hi there Sabrocks69 and gxseries.
I have been collecting these 1985 coins with and without these inner rings for some time and was beginning to lean towards post mint damage (
PMD) as the cause as others have noted elsewhere. Deciding I needed to settle this one for myself before returning my 1985 $1 coins into circulation I started hunting around on
ebay. I searched for an UNC 1985 from a mint roll. My hope was to find one that was straight out of a roll yet exhibited these inner rings.
I found one. I purchased it and once it arrived I examined it closely. The inner rings on this UNC (from mint roll) 1985 $1 had the exact same size rings as found on all of my circulated version with one difference. Where the circulated coins' inner rings were dark from circulation (not from being coloured in by pencil as some have suggested) this UNC coin had indented rings to both the OBV and REV in exactly the same areas at exactly the same width as the many circulated versions I have.
Therefore, in light of this, I am less inclined to call it
PMD. How can it be if a UNC coin straight out of the roll has the indentations?
I will try and attach some photos of the coin that is currently in a holder.
