Hi,
Wondering if anyone can verify whether the 1981 10 cents comes in two varieties, with the lettering being close / far from the rim. These have been referred to (in a footnote) in the Greg McDonald Pocket Guide, which, I realize, can have the odd error or two.
I know the varieties exist for the 1999 date, possibly with three varieties.

Hi Hans

I have not heard about this variety but bear in mind 10c coins in 1981 were minted in 2 different mints - Canberra and Wales - perhaps this variety can be attributed to this fact

Yes mrcruise, McDonald refers to the Canberra issues as having the text closer to the rim.
I haven't heard any other mention of it and wondered if it could be verified.

These descriptions are taken from a post by Qld Sandy here on CCF dated 3 Mar 2010. I found the post, but can't
post a link to it. It does have obv images.

The Canberra variety for 1981 shows the following: "It shows detail to the Queens eyebrows, while the rim is flatter, the text is thinner and flatter also, with it being further from the rim as well. There is a larger gap between the letters R and A in the word AUSTRALIA."

The Wales variety for 1981 shows the following: "a more rounded rim, thicker and rounder text which is also closer to the rim, and very little defined detail to the eyebrows on the Queen, the R and A in the word AUSTRALIA being very close together."

Thanks Nancy, I found the reference and the pics. All very useful stuff.
Interestingly, when I did a search on 1981 and 10 cents, the reference didn't come up. Is it because I'm a newbie that the search engine is limited?
In any event, I appreciate the feedback and will be looking out for these varieties.
