Just thought I'd share this. I cracked these out of it's PCGS prison today to fill holes in my Dansco's. The first was an 1896O XF morgan for the album. The 32S Washington .25 XF is the second one I did.

I've heard in the past the adage "buy the coin, not the holder." However I actually have mixed feelings about opening these. On the one hand, the coins are not in a "fancy" holder and labeled as "certified", but on the other hand, they're free with the ability to be properly handled and admired without being encased.

I picked up the Morgan for $41 and the Washington for $110 at auction.

Both pics are from the auction site. Might need a ....JK...thanks for the look.

Per Coinfrog's request. After looking at these again, I may have to retake pics on these. These are a bit overexposd...taken from the auction site.

I'd rather have those 2 in a Dansco than in a slab, just my opinion. Hope you kept the certified paper from the slabs and put them in between the album page and and the plastic slider window just for proof of authenticity!
I cracked a few ASE's for my Dansco.

I don't like press in albums. Differential toning may result.
I don't like slabs, either.
For date sets, see both sides albums in non PVC materials are my thing. That's the best for top condition coins in date or type sets.
Slabs annoyingly interfere with the album approach.

The '32-S seems to have several problems. Obverse appears wire-brushed or severely cleaned in some way, while the reverse shows some signs of ED. Definitely a details coin with little appeal, imho.

Quarter MIGHT make VF25 but I agree with Frog, details - too many things wrong with it but a "hole filler" non the less.

Morgan looks VF35 Details also - cleaned.

Appreciate the feedback thus far. As far as the grades go, both coins were slabbed and graded by PCGS as XF without details mentioned (scratches, cleaned, whizzed, etc) Not real clear on what they look at when assigning grades. At this point, they're hole fillers for me. I don't sell many coins, so these are keepers for now. May upgrade these along with others later as $$ permit.

I cracked open a NGC mexico libertad ms69 just for fun the other day. Very easy to crack open a slab, a little hammer tap along the edge of the slab and it opens clean in two pieces.

These two coins are better out of the slabs. They are both decent but I think XF is a stretch.
Rest in Peace

Popping that quarter will cost you when or if it's time to sell it. It must have been graded at 3:00 on a Friday.

There are great 9 pocket pages to form TPG coin albums. You certainly won't want to put a Washington set in one album as it would be 2 feet thick. But a more moderate set, like a medium WLH set is really gorgeous.

Either you like slabs or you don't. If it's ever time to sell you'll be so much better off with NGC or PCGS.

If this is what PCGS grade as XF I would much rather have raw coins as said these must have been graded on a Friday afternoon or after a heavy night in the bar.
Rest in Peace

With Coinfrog and pennypincher1 . Like I've always said , I call them as I see them . Both coins are Harshly cleaned so bad it bring tears to my eyes . I'm a little confused why you would pay $110 for a 32-S hole filler . In this case Buy the coin not the slab or visa-versa meant Nothing !
