Hello, I'm thinking about purchasing this seated half. Would this be considered as a details coin? Or will this be market acceptable? Thanks for your comments.

It looks like it's been cleaned,yet again it's all up to you to buy or not to buy! it does have a premium of around $40.00ish

Thank you for the replies. I want to learn more about when a cleaned coin is market acceptable, although there is no concrete answer looking at TPG graded coins.

This, like most grading, is subjective, but when the devices start to look mushy in spots (see obverse shield and the lettering at LIBERTY) while you can see plenty of detail in Liberty's hair in head, it is pretty obvious. This particular case doesn't appear to be a close call. It is more a question of whether it will be just be designated cleaned or harshly cleaned to me. Market acceptable would entail pleasing toning that obscures the damage done by the cleaning, or a cleaning that doesn't leave significant signs. But where that line is varies from person to person.

I've looked at a boatload of graded Seated coins. I don't see any obvious signs of cleaning that would trigger a details grade. It's nearly impossible to determine if a coin has been cleaned with certainty based off of photos but the seated series enjoys a greater tolerance by the TPG's for old cleaning. If it was cleaned 60 years ago, it has since recovered and developed a nice circulated cameo. The ones you have to watch out for are the blast white coins that were cleaned recently and have obvious hairlines. This coin is market acceptable.

Details cleaned..all the fields have a wiped look to them and dirt remains tucked along the lines of the devices.
