My wife always jokes that when I started collecting coins, I always said "I'll never collect nickels." Anyway here I am with an almost complete business strike set. The series is growing on me. I was able to get the 1960-2010 proofs recently. Now I am thinking about just completing a full set including 1938-1942 and 1950-1959 proofs and the 1994 and 1997 matte proof examples. I'm finding a full series run of 1950-1959 isn't easy to find and a 1938-1942 would be even tougher to find as a bundle. It looks like these might have to be found individually. Are these OK to buy raw or should I be looking at certified examples? I'm still on the fence if I should pursue this but I feel like I'm pretty close to a full set but theres a long road ahead. As I mentioned, the series is growing on me though. Anyone have a full Jefferson nickel set including proofs? If so, I'd be interested in seeing it! Thanks!

The oldest proof I have is 1957 but certainly plan on adding the rest. I haven't searched for them recently because I've been focusing on filling the few business strike holes left with nice examples.

I'm trying to complete a set of impaired Jefferson proofs from coin roll hunting. My earliest is 1960 so far. Good luck!

It should not be hard to find raw proof nickels from 38-42. They aren't expensive enough to worry about slabbing unless you insist on PF-67 coins.

I am thinking about collecting the Proof sets from 1936 to 1942. I have a complete 1942 set and most everything from 1950 to 2016. I stopped collecting the modern clad Proof sets because I kept losing money on them. At the least the silver sets have some silver coins in them, which have some value. The silver sets satisfy my collector's "sweet tooth."

I didn't start out to collect nickles either but I do.

Mine are uncirculated and in CAPS albums with includes proofs from 1950 forward,
the 94 and 97 mattes and 1954 S/D and the SMS coins.

I am glad I eventually added nickel albums to my collection.

I always liked nickels. As a kid it was the highest denomination I felt I could afford to collect.

As for proofs, not that it's really necessary but my pre-1960 proof Jeffs are all slabbed. I have, what I think is a complete set with all business, proof, satin and matte issues. But then again, even a "complete" set is never really finished as there are always upgrades to be had.

Once I get a really nice album (thinkin' CAPs with custom pages) I'll probably feel compelled to take pictures and post them.

By "complete" you mean starting with 1838?

Haha! I wish.

I was talking about Jeffs, those I got. What nickels go back to 1838? I always thought the first nickels only go back to 1866.

Doh, typo here. I meant 1938, of course, and I gather you have the proofs from that date on - congrats, and how about some pics?

Just let a 1938 proof get by me for $32.00 on ebay. Now that's discipline! 391830716377

OK, got ya.

Yeah, I have what I think is a pretty nice set of Jeffs going back to '38. The earliest proofs are still in their slabs but I plan to set them free as soon as I figure out a permanent storage solution. Same goes for the '94 and '97 mattes.

I'm also working on an MS-66 set of war time nickels. I like NGC so I'm going to be really picky.

I'll try to get around to posting a couple if pix.

Coinfrog, not the best images but you get the idea.

My plan is to buy a CAPs album(s) with custom pages for my entire Jeff collection. A lot of these little guys are going to be set free and join the buddies in the album.
