Kidding, of course!

I was saving this one for my Gadhaiya thread, but I might as well spill the beans now. I've had it for about 4 months now; the only one of its type that I have ever seen.

This is of course related to the earliest type of Gadhaiya Paisa, as both attendants wear the "thorn dress" in addition to the clear winged head gear worn by the anonymous ruler. This one in particular is unique not only in the shape of the head or the unusually sharp strike, but also the sun on the reverse has a swirl pattern; another feature I have not seen elsewhwere.

Oh and don't forget the trademark handlebar moustache!

@finn, from your earlier posts, it seemed like the flans were undersized compared with the dies. For this piece, the opposite seems true. Any thoughts on why? Maybe this was more of a trial strike to confirm that the dies were acceptable to the king?

handlebar moustache!

I think you've gotten your Fu Manchu and handlebar moustaches mixed up there, Steve. But, either way, great coin!

Just having a bit of fun I agree it was most likely intended to be a Fu Manchu, although it almost appears to be connected to the beard running along the chin. Nobody really knows who made these coins, but the bust seems undeniably Turkic to me.

And @Spence, using dies too large for the flan was a decidedly Indian practice. It allowed for thicker, more sturdy coins without requiring very precise flan preparation. The Sassanians on the other hand preferred huge flat drachms of ~27-32mm with a "rim" of un-struck metal extending well past the die. I'll get all of these measured and numbered for my do-over of the Indo Sassanian coins; these tend to be about 25mm with a die of maybe 20-21mm. A lot of them don't line up well and are "bent"
