Yesterday I switched on to CNN twice, and both times there was coin news being broadcast. The first had to do with the Presidential dollar coin series. Has anyone heard if Bush has signed that bill yet, and if he does, when would the new coins first be minted?

The second story had to do with four gold Kruggerands being donated into a Salvation Army kettle. Was that in Indiana? Seems like it has become a tradition in whatever city it happened.

The dollar series has not passed the full Senate and House yet as their versions are a bit different. However, Rep. Mike Castle told me that the bill should see the President before the end of Jan. The first coins will be minted in 2007.

I heard that 1 ounce AGE's were found in San Francisco (Salvation Army). I have not heard about the Kruggerands.

Sombody has been doing it in Indianapolis for quite some time and thankfully, someone at the Salvation Army knew those gold pieces were worth more than the stated amount on the coin. Yes, its true, we Hoosiers have more gold and silver than we know what to do with, but not much in brains so we just give it away. Now, before you ask, I have given all mine away (Kyra, but she will deny it) so you all have to wait until next time!

It's not me either, but I'd love to someday be in a position to do that. It happens here in the Fort as well, every year someone puts a half-ounce gold piece in a kettle somewhere in town.

Gary, the gold coins in question were reported by Channel 9 out of Denver, and the coins were found in a bell ringers pot outside of the state capitol building in Denver. The Salvation Army spokesman said it also happened last year, only in a different location. No idea who put them in the pot.

Oh, my mistake as us Hoosiers only give away U.S. gold! Apparently it happens in quite a few cities and, if I remember correctly, it was a $20 double eagle last year! Guess I need to get me some bells to jingle and a high traffic location with a thunder mug to catch all the cash and coins (to search for key dates and gold) before contributing to a local charity! Us coin collectors are always thinking, aren't we?

One of the local(East Tennessee) talk radio shows did a segment on Salvation Army pots yesterday. Apparently putting expensive items in the pots is nation-wide. All sizes of gold coins, diamond rings, and other forms of precious metals have turned up in some places. Tis the season to give and some people are giving nicely![:0]
