I recently received a few low grade Key Date coins as a form of payment because the person insisted I take something - (I had originally done the job for free).

She had disposed of most of her late husbands coin collection, and had given me a complete Peace dollar set in a 1960's vintage old blue Whitman 3 Page holder (Copyright 1960). They were mostly lower grade, and looks like they were pulled from circulation.

When I checked a few minor coins, this 1883/2 Shield nickel showed up. Since I collect errors, and not Varieties, I wasn't sure if what I was looking at was a overdate variety or not until I checked my Coin World Monthly Magazine.

I then checked it under the microscope to verify it was the real thing and not more damage.

I can't understand why anyone would bang up the edges of the coin, on both sides!! Unless it was pulled out of circulation like this in the late 1950's to early 1960's.

I'm at the age where I remember Shield nickels and Morgan dollars were still in circulation up to the mid '60's.

I'm thinking of submitting this, the 1921 & 1928 lower grade Peace dollars & a few other coins to ANACS, if for no other reason then to show they're not altered.

Curious to see if anyone else agrees with me, and if not, what to do with them raw.

You remember getting shields in t5he 60's? I don't. Only one I found was in my aunt's garden in circa 1959. Started collecting in late 50's with dad, ALL was silver, dollars and all, makes my heads swim now! Do remember a few V nicks on a regular basis when looking through rolls, mercs, Indians, buffs, were given in change everywhere. My heartwrencher was I found a 1937D Three Leg in what was really good shape, clear date good feathers from what I remember...in change from a cherry coke at Woolworth's in Glen Ellyn. Didn't have a hole in folder so into my safe place(piggy bank) it went. Months later was showing to friend, it wasn't there. I hadn't been in it, just plum gone! Come to find out a month before, Mom needed some parking change...

To your question, no it's not the over-date, too much 2, just a 1882. http://www.shieldnickels.net/1883_2/1883_2.html Slab the Peace. See too many 1928's at auctions in raw that have to wonder about, live or Memorex? In slabs, it is known and can be fairly priced. Now, if YOU know it is a fake, then of course put it raw in 2x2 on ebay (if you do, Karma will get you!). Do think that slabs will be better way to go...BTW, why ANACS?

John1... had to change, die chip it is.

Sorry, not an 1883/2. See this webpage for more info:

This is a very common misattribution.

That's funny, now everyone knows why I'm not into Die Varieties as I have never seen a 83/82 and it fooled me.

I have no problem dropping this in a envelope and giving it to someone starting out, just need an address.
