What it appears is a bad cleaning, where some very old crud had protected an underlayer of good but other areas environmentally effected didn't clean? Ya know, when ya shudda left well enough alone!

Pretty severe corrosion, and that could be a number of things. My first thought is fire, because that would explain the discoloration and the corrosion, but I'm no expert. Maybe buried then harshly cleaned?

I have a detector buddy who used steel wool to clean coins before I met him. This looks exactly like what some of his older cents looked like.

Okay, okay. I have to come clean.

I'm just messing with you guys. I was wondering if anyone would have any suspicions about the image. I was just goofing around one evening and created this image and hadn't found any use for it.

Here's the original:

This is the intermediate step:

So, if anyone wants to make their coin look like a harshly cleaned dig, let me know!

I'm in the camp of buried and burned. but a texture map and mask blend - LOL! Didn't see that one coming at first glance of the coin.

Well, at least there's one person that finds a little humor in this. I have to say though, the edits made for a convincing dig find.

What about this one?

What-Happened-To-This-1898-IHC?

I realize this serves no purpose but, I was surprised at how easy it was to change the appearance with preset filters to make something that looks legit.
