Hi all,

Picked this up at an auction today and upon looking over it, I was noticing that the T and Y in Liberty on the obverse look to have some doubling.

Thoughts?

Nice coin.

I think your coin is normal. Comparing it to a couple that are for sale on ebay, I see that they are very nearly identical. It might be the result of a worn die but I don't see doubling.

Thanks for the feedback and I'm also wondering what this coin would likely be graded at? It looks like it's in MS condition and just unfortunately has a scratch on Libertys face.

I don't see a listing for a DDO for the 1879 Quarter Eagle on NGC's Variety Plus.

Don't take the above as the end-all authority that such a variety doesn't exist as it could.

Checking the Heritage Auction archive I did find other dates in which the listing stated the coin had a recut Y in Liberty.

Even with good pictures and zoom feature, I couldn't tell how to pick up the recut letter. Granted I don't know what to look for.

I know I haven't really provided an answer however maybe someone else will know.

There's chance it's a touch of Machine Doubling which is quite common. When you say "Doubled Die" it means the die itself contains the doubling and is much more uncommon.

If not for the obverse gouge your coin might pull a 61 or 62 grade even though it looks AU++ to me. As-is I'd be happy with an AU55 result.

Check other year close to that to see if it is found on them as well. It may be part of the master hub.
