This coin was made to commemorate the Royal Visit of the Queen to Australia in 1954. If you look closely, it's not really a chimaera, even though it looks like one; the two animals are standing side by side. The lion symbolises England, the kangaroo Australia.

The design was (and is) somewhat controversial because it doesn't actually say "Royal Visit" or otherwise give any indication of what it was supposed to commemorate. Google "Royal visit florin" for more information, etc..

Edited to add link to Cruzi's Coins page on this coin.

OHH thanks, I thought I could see a shadow of another animal or something. Thanks for the info.

I thought it was weird it doesn't have any text on it, just the image.

That's funny, cos when I first saw this coin I thought it was a kind of Pan chimera as well!

G'day, there were lots of these around when I was a boy, and I never understood the connection with the Royal Visit.
I read in a Numismatic Journal or book that this coin was described as "the worst-designed Australian coin". Obviously, that was an opinion.
In 1954, there was also a standard CoA florin.
The 1954 RV was significant because it was the first visit to Oz by a reigning sovereign.

yeh Leajet, I didn't have a proper look, the head of the lion looks a bit like part of the kangaroos neck from a distance, lol.

Thanks for the info. Peter, I heard it was controversial becasue there was no writing explaining what the occacsion was. I don't blame the people. At first I tohught it was a special Australian coin just made for the sake of it.

England has long been represented by a Lion going waaay back. Of course it's not hard to figure out which country is represented by the kangaroo. Symbols like this were often used on old coins.

As a matter of interest, the 2006 Ashes dollar has a lion and kangaroo, representing the cricket teams for England and Australia.
