I spied a nice Caracalla As a few weeks back
A quick check on my 3rd century collection confirmed what I already suspected .......
I already had this type and besides I had picked it up for a song back when prices had plunged south soon after the internet created huge a surplus.

But it would be an upgrade and worth following I reasoned since the reverse was at least a full grade better

Upgrade-Ae-As-Of-Caracalla-.......-Rather-!

Around two days before the auction closed I decided to formulate my "top price"
(note to novices ..... when bidding on things you really want always decide early on how much is too much ! )

I pulled my AE As out and compared the Caracallas with my computer
(I had until now I had been relying on my Iphone)

Upgrade-Ae-As-Of-Caracalla-.......-Rather-!

Very similar condition obverse and clearly superior reverse. Wanting to be sure it was really worth the expense I studied the two obverses to decide which one I actually liked better
Difficult to decide
Some differences yes ....
But so many things so very similar looking

Well as we say in Massachusetts
Eventually
"The dawn does break over Marblehead"

In an instant
My top price doubled

Upgrade-Ae-As-Of-Caracalla-.......-Rather-!

Fortunately for me
no one else thought it worth the price

So now I am stuck with a pair !
Well I can't very well separate twins now can I

A very nice set of twins to be "stuck" with. I enjoyed the tale. Great new addition. Congrats.

Anyways nice pair.

Although not looking like identical twins the obverses are a definite die match.
Unfortunately the photo of the pair together do not clearly show this as the lighting (and corrosion) makes them appear slightly different.
Look at the VS behind Caracallas head. The ribbon on his laurel. The A beneath the bust and the drapery on left shoulder.
Together there are around 6 points of similarity which by themselves make it almost certain.
Seeing them side by side puts it at around 99.99%
As the reverses are not I assume that either one of the reverses was replaced or perhaps after the afternoon wine break one was switched for another.
Either way it seems remarkable that two coins might have started out in the same place 1800 years ago and traveled different paths only to both land in my hand today.
