So I have this 1877 IH penny (its 100% real, but ugly), but its in rough shape. Few scratches on the obverse, but the reverse looks a little better. I have a feeling it would come back graded as "AG Details" with the scratches on it. But I want it preserved so it doesn't start to look any worse. (I may have answered my own question just there). I cant see it getting a grade any higher than a AG3, is it worth the $ to send it in? Is the consensus it would get a 'details' grade as well. Thanks

Definitely genuine but a details coin, imho. These always sell best when authenticated - send it to ANACS, no further.

If you aren't sure it is real, or you are wanting to sell it and you know that no one else will buy if if it isn't slabbed because they don't know what they are looking at, then ANACS. If you are sure it is real and just want to preserve it, Coin World slab shell.

Yeah, low grade details, and not worth sending it in imo. Save your $.

This coin will never look any worse not being in a slab.

ANACS but only if you want to sell it.

It would not grade straight. Probably AG3 details scratches, pitting, etc. Still it is genuine. Your call on how you want to spend your money.

The only reason for slabbing would be to help with authenticity. Lots of counterfeiting sins can be covered up with lots of 'wear'.
Potential value justifies slabbing.
Coinfrog has a legitimate point that should be made.

I would probably send it to ANACS if I ever thought about selling it. Otherwise I would just keep it the way it is.

It's genuine. Personally, I'd not get it slabbed. I'd put it in a partial set to sell. My experience has been that many collectors like to buy partial sets with a few keys or semi-keys therein.
If you want to get it certified, I'd suggest that it NOT be graded and simply certified as genuine.

I would not get it slabbed. I would be putting it in my Dansco anyway.

IMHO, it is a personal preference. I had my 77 slabbed mainly to confirm authenticity. Thirty years ago, we probably would not be having this discussion.

I am able to send it to PCGS for $18, the local coin shop it sending in a batch of coins, and I decided to spend the few extra dollars to have it in the PCGS holder. Does a little to help re-sale value. I was able to send in my 1909-S VDB in at the same time, so I thought its worth a shot. Having it in the PCGS holder I am confident can add that $20 back into the resale value if I decide to upgrade the coin. I agree itll be details with scratches, am more interested in the 1909. Will see how they come. Thanks all for the input!
