Just when you thought you had seen the last of that lot Tetricus I IMP C TETRICVS P F AVG, Radiate draped bust right / SPES PVBLICA, Spes advancing left holding flower and raising hem of skirt. RIC 136, Cohen 170. So it's a common issue of a common emperor and is pretty rough. What gives, Finn? Despite the "standard" weight of 3.3g for Gallic antoninianii of the early 270s (many were 2g or lighter), this behemoth comes in at 4.69g! Nearly double the usual weight! Now, far from being a significant or valuable find, the style of the bust and lack of details in the hem of Spes' robe strongly suggest this is just a barbarous issue. But still, I have never seen such a massive antoninianus, nor have I seen a barb that is so significantly heavier than the original. Feel free to chime in with any Tetricii, official or not! That is one big barb. You sure gleaned some great coins from that lot. Well done, Steve!

Weight suggests perhaps Roman Colonial origin, but that is unlikely because of the Latin legends.
Sear does not list Roman Colonial coins for Tetricus 1, with either Latin OR Greek legends. All of his coins are Roman Imperial.
I agree that the die cutting looks like a barbarous copy, mimicking traditional Roman Imperial style. Weight presents somewhat of a dichotomy, because barbarous antoninianii are never this heavy.
This coin is a contradiction within itself.

I have the same problem with an antoninianus of Victorinus obv:IMP C VICTORINUS P F AUG : draped radiate bust right rev: LAETITIA AUG : Laetitia staying left with wreath and anchor Southers mint ( Cologna ?), 18 mm , 5.83 gr Ric51,C56 In Ric p 381/382 is said there is a considerable variation in the size and weight of the antoniniani .If you take my coin in hand , it resembles ,as Sel suggests, very much to a Roman colonial, exactly the same size and thickness as a tetradrachm I have from Probus .

Well I'm embarrassed to say that I should not have been working from memory. The coin weighs 4.69g, not 5.69.
And WOW! That is a huge Victorinus!

I was thinking there was something wrong with the weight when I saw the barb ... . For that weight , it had to be the barb of Mathusalem . albert

4.69 still heavy for Tetricus. The Victorinus quite coppery, but better quality die cutting. Some of the antoninianii of Victorinus are still white looking, of 'OK' quality billon.

Normally I don't have much to do with coins of Tetricus, but recently I got this one in a combo lot with a Fausta piece I was after. It's a normal 2.82 g and there's nothing special about it but the coincidence of landing it right when you introduced your topic. Maybe you can attribute it?
