$1 Gold Coins 1868/1887 - Real Or Fake?

Both are low-mintage issues, but the 1868 carries a stronger premium in the market. westernsky Pillar of the Community United States 7620 Posts	Posted 07/08/2017 6:06 pm There are probably more counterfeit $1 (and $3) gold pieces around than there are real ones. For that reason third party authentication and grading is a must. Your coins look authentic....unfortunately, a lot of the fake ones look real, too. Report this Post to the Staff

g048406 Pillar of the Community 861 Posts	Posted 07/08/2017 10:15 pm Your coin appears very similar to this 1887 $1 Gold counterfeit. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1887-Prince...047675.l2557 The numeric font is thinner than on a genuine. Unfortunately, the 1868 is the most counterfeited $1 gold out there. The "s" in states is of the wrong font and the devices are mushy.......on the plus side, the counterfeit 1887 did sell for $89.95 on ebay. Report this Post to the Staff
