inherited fair few coins - trying to sort out real vs fake with the gold coins. Any thoughts on these would be much appreciated. Thank you

Both coins weigh 1.7g each, by the way

At a (very) cursory glance they appear authentic, but third-party authentication is always strongly recommended. Both are low-mintage issues, but the 1868 carries a stronger premium in the market.

There are probably more counterfeit $1 (and $3) gold pieces around than there are real ones.

For that reason third party authentication and grading is a must.

Your coins look authentic....unfortunately, a lot of the fake ones look real, too.

It's worth sending these to PCGS or NGC.

Almost anyone who might buy them will want that verification.

Your coin appears very similar to this 1887 $1 Gold counterfeit.

The numeric font is thinner than on a genuine. Unfortunately, the 1868 is the most counterfeited $1 gold out there. The "s" in states is of the wrong font and the devices are mushy.......on the plus side, the counterfeit 1887 did sell for $89.95 on ebay.

I agree, getting it checked out by PCGS would be a good idea if your planning to sell it.

1868 is definitely a fake. Can't tell for the 1887.
