I have several loupes, a few 15X, a 20X, and a 30w/ led. How is it that the 15X magnify better? the higher power ones are clear, but small and fairly useless for seeing doubling or rpm's. My first loupe, a 3 lens plastic one from radio shack is better with one lens (5power). Is there some trick to using the higher mag ones or is it "creative" advertising?

I have a 15x and got a triplet 20x thinking that the 20x would be better. After a week or so of it sitting on my desk, I got it out and messed with and found that if I used it the opposite way that it looked as I should have used it, I found that it works pretty well.

I have a 40x and a 60x, although they work more like a 20x and a 30x. I'm not sure about the 15x loupes, though.

There are several different types of lens out there. Hastings is the best in my opinion. Triplets are better than doublets. Glass lens are best. Nothing higher than 14x.I have used my 14x, no name doublet the most and I hold it backwards for best results.I do have a B&L hastings triplet 14x but rarely use it,the sight picture seems a bit small for me. It does give a much higher quality view though.I would think that only the high end brands will be close to the advertised power.

There is a massive amount and varieties of Magnification lenses. Usually, never always, the higher the power, the smaller the glass diameter. Ever notice that? Larger magnifications with a large glass is just not common so manufacturers seldom make them. Yes they are available but usually very expensive if the magnification is large and the glass diameter too is large. There are so called science web sites that have a very large assortment of those.
