I'd not run across one of these before. 18.1 mm in diameter, 2.6 mm thick. Reverse is offset 90° from the obverse. Seemingly designed so as to give the impression it was derived from an actual coin, although this is clearly not the case. Thus, I have no confidence in the validity of that date, and wouldn't be surprised if it was in fact from the 1950's, 60's, or even 70's.
I spent a year in France in 1975-6 and again in 1978-9. During the first period, tokens like yours were sold for 40 centimes at tobacconists' shops and could be used in some payphones, although newer payphones took 20-centime pieces. All the tokens (called 'jetons' by the French) that I saw were dated 1937! By 1978 they had been phased out and more modern payphones taking a variety of coins had been introduced.
The jeton is designed by Lucien Bazor, who also designed various French circulating coins of the 1930s and 1940s.
