Trying to be brief:

Names example:
#128008; is cat (English), un gato (Spanish), neko (Japanese), Mieze (German), un chat (French), paka (Swahili), con meo (Vietnamese) and countless other names depending on the language.

Classification:
The only one for #128008; is Felis catus no matter the language or country.

Carolinus Linnaeus, around 1830, invented a classification system so the worldwide scientific community would not have the many different language names confuse discussing plants and animals.

Generally the last two categories (genus and species) are all that is needed and using only these two is called binary taxonomy. The entire list, broad categories first and narrowing down are:
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.

Only in internet-modern times have people been "correcting" others by mistaking a taxonomic classification as an animals name.

Or...we had better start "correcting" people they don't have a cat but a Felis catus

Um, thanks, but I was really just pointing out the typo in "classification."

@kbppll
Thanks...a good example of what I have already said is easy to find online. A list even of what appears to be a website which should know the difference to be correct (scientifically and historically).

The historic derivations of the terms (as provided above), taxonomic system (as provided above), and derivation of the scientific system (as provided above). Refute the findings on webpages such as these.

If confusion is ensuing, I suggest going back to history component of this issue as posted above. The animal's only name (outside indigenous tribes) for the first 130 years was later translated into the Latin and the word bison was only then associated with the animal, and then, only in the scientific community.

Please understand I have to suspect the facts are not being taken into account anyway if your post was meant to somehow (?) be a legitimate rebuttal point instead of just showing an example of what I mentioned exists.

Misinformation from both a historical and scientific standpoint, that this is ONLY a bison have made it common for people/websites to use this animal's genus/species for its proper name. And while people can call it a frog if they want to, the misinformation is, adamantly by some, being defended despite the verifiable facts.

I have seen the internet making many wrong spellings popular. I have seen a lot of people writing about "shinny" coins.

So I made this:
