Hello! I'm fairly new at collecting and I like error coins. I'm wondering if anyone knows what happened to this quarter and what would you call this type of error? I've googled it and I can't seem to find anything like it for comparison. I've tried to take the best pictures I could but the macro on my cell isn't that great.

Lobotomy?

Kidding aside, it looks like post-mint damage ( PMD). The raised/distorted metal around the hole makes it seem as if high temperatures were involved but only on a localized point. That makes me think electricity was involved.

Maybe the current running through the coin weakened the center enough for it to fall out completely? The hole is jagged and that raises questions for me.

I just found a 1967 P Quarter last week that has 2 tiny holes on the reverse and they don't go all the way through it. The quarter isn't even damaged on the front of it. These holes aren't evenly round like if they were drilled or anything. Just saw a video with another 1967 quarter with a hole in it on YouTube.

But the coin he was showing as a nickel. But the Blow Hole looks the same.

Except for the raised metal around the edge of the hole which is higher than the field and on the obv higher than the devices. If the hole had been there when the coin was struck the metal around the edges would conform to the fields and/or devices.
