I have pondered doing a coin search / roll hunt on dollar coins... though I have a couple of questions...

1.) Are Presidential dollars and Sacagawea dollars kept rolled seperately by banks?

2.) Below are the known errors I know of to look for... anyone know any others?

  • Sacagawea struck on clad Anthony planchet

  • Washington Quarter obverse struck on Sacagawea obverse

  • Sacagawea with Presidential Edge Lettering

  • Presidential Dollar without Edge Lettering

  • Blank Planchet

  • Monroe Dollar struck on wrong planchet (quarter planchet?)

.....

3.) What are the etimated mintages of these errors and the likeliness of actually running accross any one of these errors...A good friend of mine found his "godless dollar" i.e. dollar w/o edge lettering in only 1000 coins searched...

1) No, you can order a box of the new dollar coins but most of the time, their rolls are mixed. Although sometimes, the rolls that they have under the counter are full rolls of the same type(washington, monroe, etc...)

One of the banks I go to has many of them on the counter in some kind of holders for loose change. The always ask if I want any. All are different. From what they tell me not many people want them.

1) they are mixed unless you get a roll of the newest Pres dollar and that will be a solid date/mintmark roll.

2) That pretty much covers the known errors but do not forget the doubled edge lettering as well. For the Sackies, there is a reverse of 1999, aka the "Cheerios Dollar" with enhanced tail feather detail- only 5,500 were minted and not many are known with the remainder either floating in change or still in someones junk drawer in the original Cheerios packaging.

3)Several of these will be virtually impossible to find. I do not believe that a Sacky on Anthony planchet has ever been reported and they were not minted at the same time, virtually eliminating the chances of it occurring. Only 10 genuine Washington/Sacky mules have been confirmed and only one Sacky with edge lettering has been discovered. The Monroes on clad planchets more than likely did not make it to circulation at all. That leaves the plain edges and doubled edges which have not been reported on any 2008 issues and also got progressively rarer with the 2007 releases with Washington and Adams being the most common. Blank planchets can also rarely be found as noted by the $100+ value they command. Your friend probably got lucky due to location as there were only a few places in the country that had access to the coins with the potential to contain edge lettering errors.

Searching a few rolls at a time will probably yield nothing for you. Unless you have at least $1000 to tie up in a box at a time, you will probably be wasting your time sorry to say. Even then, your best bet would be to get boxes of new coins with the hopes of finding something fresh.
