So started this slightly different thread as my reason for posting is different.

My wife told me this came in the mail today, have not gotten to look at it yet. I'm asking more seasoned collectors, is it worth it?

I had to work a good amount of OT to justify the purchase and now am kind of regretting it due to the general feeling of various posts/sites that it's not.

If I was in love with the coin (as I'm with the yearly Eagles) I wouldn't care but purchased purely on spec.

thanks for your opinions on its collective value.

Is it worth it? Are any of the mint's coins really worth it? These bullion coins they sell are usually priced much more than what they're worth in bullion and don't gain much value years later. The only way for them to really be worth it is if that's what you collect and enjoy.

I hadn't heard of this coin so I googled it. I like the design however if the price I'm reading is correct, it seems expensive @ $1300. Personally, if it were me and I had $1300 to spend on coins, I'd probably want to buy a classic St Gaudens $20 coin instead. However, if you enjoy collecting platinum then I don't see a problem with it. How about you post some pictures of your new purchase? :)

You got it backwards - supposed to ask FIRST if it's worth it before you buy!!

The only reason to buy any coin, or any collectable, for that matter, is because you love the item.

Spending the money using the excuse that it's an investment which may increase in value will be wrong more times than right.

As the gentleman expressed with his preference for a St. Gauden's double eagle, each of us spends on what makes us feel most accomplished within our personal desires. If that platinum is keeping you up at night with worry, it's a bad purchase. If you feel warm and fuzzy each time you see it or think of it, it was a great buy.

Buy what you love, although some passions may seem impossible to fulfill.

I don't want to be a kill joy but here is my take.... The US Mint is just like any other retail outlet. They sell their products at a retail price to make a profit. Just like if you bought a new computer at Best Buy or a new car at your local new car dealership. If you were to try and sell it later it would be worth much less than you paid for it retail. There are a few exceptions always but I look at my purchases from the US Mint just like I look at the rest of my purchases at any store. In most cases I would loose money if I were to try and resell what ever I bought. With VERY few exceptions. That's why I buy what I like and NEVER speculate the return.

Loud and clear :) It wouldn't keep me up at night to keep it (OT money I earned for it, didn't take too long, and I can return it w/i 10 days so I can decide if I like it enough).

I'll try and get some shots tonight and post. Still undecided on whether or not to keep but actually the pics the gov put out IMO doesn't do it justice; looks a lot better in person.

Thanks all, from a purely investment stand-point probably not worth it, lesson learned but now have to decide if I like it enough to keep.

You asked and My thoughts.
last Christmas my wife bought me a gold quarter dollar. paid mint price for it.
I wish it had been something else for the money, silver. old or new.
But it was her thoughts and research that made her buy it. so I will keep it and love it.
I put it in the safe and have not looked at it since.

Here are some pics, I'm TERRIBLE at the photos and know it so...
I completely appreciate the honestly, I would not have asked if I didn't want to hear it from people who have been collecting a lot longer than I have.

Thank you

I didn't know they went back to the original design on the proof. Platinum isn't really my cup of tea, as it was never used in "real" american coins, but a lot of the designs have been fantastic.
Rest in Peace

In the photos you notice many white specs of dust or lint or something. Buy a can of compressed air (many old time photo stores carry them) and blow the outside of the plastic shell. If it gets rid of all those little specs, good enough.

The next option is to blow inside the shell, but you can't do that if you are going to return it. If you don't return it and you still have those little white specs, blow the inside and the coin with the compressed air to get rid of all of those specs. On a proof, especially, they can cause problems later.

I buy only from the US mint what I personally like to collect and look at. I bought last year with all the craze of the 100 year anniversary of the Mercury dime, SLQ, and Walker half. I bought the quarter expecting a sellout and to flip it for a profit. Guess what the coin didn't sell out and I broke even on it.

Now the only coins I buy from the US mint are the proof silver eagles. I love the look of them and I don't keep them in the mint packaging. I take them out with gloves and insert them into my dansco. I have 2 dansco's for silver eagles. One for general bullion and the other book is for the proofs. Perhaps I will post them today or one day when I have the time.

Basically buy what you love as others have said.

My goodness that is an ugly coin. (The photo itself seems just fine to me).

Imthealphaomega - any topics with pics of that proof eagle collection? Sounds like a cool idea!

BTW - I really do like the reverse of that coin. It's simple but still looks nice. Personally though, that's a lot of money. I probably wouldn't keep it for that reason. I also don't have any coins anywhere near this price range. Do they make something with that same design in silver? Might be a lot easier on your wallet and you could enjoy the remainder of that money on multiple other purchases!
