Can someone please tell me why the 1963 penny is shiny black. And the 1963 D penny is red please. If the pics are not clear enough I can post with the hubbys camera later..thanks so much

to the forum. They both left the mint the same color. The black one suffers from Environmental Damage. That is, it's come into contact with an unknown substance after leaving the mint. Some substances are chemicals, stains, ground contact, etc.

You're welcome, and they are cool. I like all denominations of coins, even a few that are damaged rather than errors. If they're interesting, I think most collectors keep them. Find some more that look out of the ordinary, we'll talk about them.

I have LOTS.. lol. Pennies.. dimes.. nickels.. I found a 1898 penny too.. that's cool..

It certainly is. Just think of who may have held that coin 120 years ago as a newly minted cent! Coins are like little handheld time-capsules.
