Save?
I found a couple star notes and small head 5$

20$ with serial# J00554455* a 5$ small head and another one star.

The $20 is decent and the others worn avg circulated.

Are they worth saving?

The $20 and small portrait $5 could fetch a little over face. Are you looking to have examples of star notes for your collection, or investment potential?

If the former, why not keep them?

If the latter, inflation will eat the value probably faster than they will appreciate with age. Liquidate now and invest in a coin with better growth potential.

Here is a website that will help you determine if the star note is from a collectible print run http://www.mycurrencycollection.com...notes/lookup

Print runs of 640,000 and smaller are what most seek.

If I may ask, why? Most of them were printed in huge quantities and have little upside potential. Nothing else you'd rather own?

Depends on the note. If it's from a small run, go for it. Don't be saving every bill with a star you find though. It adds up and there is virtually no chance to make money.

I save most of the $1 stars I come across (which really aren't all that many; maybe 2-3 / year), but Coinfrog and Illegaltender are certainly right. There's little upside (unless it just plain makes you happy) and inflation will eat away at any value.

If you can afford to sock it away...keep it. Worse case scenerio is that you would have to spend it...or misplace it...or the dog gets ahold of it...or your kids...or their friends...or...

The last Star Note I saved was indeed a Replacement Note and placed in Notes printed for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The back of this Note has a partial 3rd Print Offset transfer showing the "B" Block Serial Number.

I don't remember when I posted this on CCF, or the Thread its in, but do remember discussing the BEP production date, and the only confirmed Star Replacement Notes printed that Month was indeed F-* (star) Notes.

I found these photos in my CCF upload file, and happy they're there since I lost them when my laptop died last year.

FYI - since Serial Numbers are counted down when Printing, if the serial number on the offset transfer can be decifired, the serial number of the note this note replaced would be known.

Well that is definitely a keeper. But it would also be if it weren't a star.

I do too. I use them as an emergency cash fund.

Thanks for all the help. and Meadowview for the link, the 20$ has a 640,000 run but most of my stars are 1,280,000 or larger runs.
Good info
