I was going through some material and found this 1917 $2 dollar bill and just noticed that the seal appears to be much lighter then the well circulated example. The paper feels good but does anybody have any thoughts about authenticity?

Rick

Almost looks like a photo copy but I'm no expert on older large bills.

Could be several things, including sun fading and low ink. It is unusual, but difficult to say without handling the note. Would you show us the reverse, please.

The Speelman/White note appears to be washed and probably also pressed.

I have experimented by washing common notes to see the effects, and overall the inks fade and the field becomes brighter, much like the upper deuce.

Agree - probably washed, maybe even with a tad of bleach, then pressed.

Even for a novice collector, that upper note is completely devoid of any patina.
