Mine cost me $45 on Amazon, and $8 for the brass extension tube that is necessary to move distance for pixing dollar size coins:

Is a microscope camera a better choice for coins than an iPhone 6? Also, Crazyb0, I see you use a laptop in your setup - could I use my iPad with a microscope camera? Thanks for indulging newbie questions.

Herbaby: I don't know if you could use an adapter cable from a standard USB 3.0 (recommended) to the microUSB or not. I wouldn't think so because camera comes w/disc of software to run the program. It may work on a Chromebook.
if you are serious about RPMs and other errors it just may be a worthwhile investment to get a cheap laptop. one I'm using now was $154. I just got a spam today @ a device that attaches to smartphone and uses telephoto lenses for very far pix, wondered if it could be adapted to macro camera lenses?

I just picked up the Celestron USB microscope from Best Buy. It looks like the one you referenced and was $54 shipped to my house. There are some that have a better zoom, but it works pretty well for what I want to do. I wish you could turn the LEDs off.
Edit: Target has it about $10 cheaper...

Bump...there isn't a flywheel on the cord? If not, try a home made diffuser. Either paint over or cut out donuts from milk cartons, try different layers of blackening/graying over the LEDs(make sure you cutout middle )

Thanks, Crazyb0! I tried a piece of foam, but I didn't think about the milk carton idea. I will give that a shot. Looking at coins under these things can become an addiction very quickly. I've found lots of interesting stuff like Cuds and different doubling.

Bump, give you a few tips: For Doubled dies and RPM's, use a 10-30x loupe to spot them then use the scope to ID them. Too much mag will show you TMI unrelated to error coin study. You see metal flow and micro damages that just don't matter and do only confuse matters. I bought a couple cheap clip-on gooseneck LED lights that I use instead of ring LEDs, find ring reflects weird especially on luster. I back off close-ups so about 1/3 of coin is in focus, see what needs to be seen usually, sometimes faint split serifs or notching on details for DDR's need that kind of close work.

Thanks again, Crazy. The lighting set up for my scope is definitely lacking and I hope to improve soon.
OP can hopefully use this info as well. After you look through these scopes for a while, you can get used to seeing most of the odd things that you mentioned. But a loupe is quicker and is the way that "professionals" look at coins. I use a magnifier for preliminary viewing and then queue up the coins for the scope.

USSID18, can you post some photos of coins you've taken with the Carson eFlex Effective Magnification such as a whole coin and zoomed in coin details? I am interested in this set up.

TheForce, Sure, let me try. At the moment, the problem on this end isn't taking decent pictures. The problem is posting them on this forum/website. For me, posting pictures here (for whatever reason) is just not that easy. This site just doesn't seem to be user friendly from where I sit. Maybe I just need more practice. Whatever the case, let me try a put some pictures up here for you to review. Stby.......

Thanks USSID18! I used to use Photobucket to post pictures here but they are pretty much now unusable due to the excessive ads/pop-ups.
