I just clicked on 25 listings, every single one takes Paypal. That's because the minute you don't accept it, you lose at least 50% of your bids. Yes we tried it.
Like it or not Paypal is here to stay and if you start an auction site that forbids it, it will fold faster than Superman on laundry day. Buyers like Paypal and the buyers pay the bills.

Ya didn't click on the right ones. I clicked 5 and only 3 had PayPay as an option. The difference is Oztion don't make it mandatory. They give you a choice. Many buyers and sellers in Australia HATE Paypal. You can feel the anger in this ebay forum. http://forums.ebay.com/forum.jspa?f...ID=500000001

Don't know why the link isn't working, I tried to fix it. quote: Many buyers and sellers in Australia HATE Paypal.
Sellers I understand. Buyers I don't. You know Bigfella is probably one of the biggest haters of PP I have ever seen. Yet he still takes it, ask him why.

forums.ebay.com/forum.jspa?forumID=500000001http://www.coincommunity.com/1/auebayforumlink.aspThere, I worked around it ~ BobbyLet's try again. Edit, nope, must be some kind of ebay conspiracy hotlink block. Anyway, if you copy and paste into a new window and manually put the http thing before it, it works then. The forum is worth a read.

I don't think it's necessary to find a site the doesn't have PayPal, what's needed are sites where buyers & sellers have the freedom to choose which type of payment they wish to make/take, like: http://www.oztion.com.au/ Dictatorships are eventually overthrown & if that happens to ebay it'll be their own greedy fault. Whether sites accept/promote PayPal or not is fairly irrelevant to me, I just believe in freedom of choice.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Nancy, I agree with you to a point.
An example... if a member here ran an auction and offered GreenZap as a payment option... I'd kill it immediately and no amount of "freedom of..." talk could make me change my mind.
There are points where I will put my foot down to protect the members even if it ruffles a few feathers.

Bobby....I think the thing you do not understand is that the Aussie market is slightly different to the US market. Over 50% of my ebay customers pay by bank transfer. Almost none of my website customers pay by Paypal. This is different to the US where Paypal payments form over 80% of payments. In Australia choice is valued. Paypal are removing choice. This is the basis of anti-competitive behaviour, which with a bit of luck the ACCC will protect consumers from. I for do not like being told how to run my business and pay 3% for the privledge of doing so. This is particularly so when paypal is the most unsafe method of funds transfer I accept.

The problem that I have with ebay is that I prefer to pay with a direct deposit. Sellers prefer this method of payment because they get immediate access to the money and theye is no fee payable to paypal. Assuming that everyone is honest it is a legitimate form of payment. It is basically paying the seller cash. ebay are saying that I can't pay the seller with a timely and legitimate payment method. ebay talk about the safety of using paypal, but what recourse have I got if paypal make a decision against me that is incorrect? Absolutely none! It seems to me that the US citizens don't mind being asked by greedy corporations to 'touch their toes', because they haven't had the same opportunities that we in Oz have enjoyed. We don't and won't cop that cr*p from anyone. We know when we're being shafted. As Bobby put it, if I don't like the rules, take my shoes and walk away. I have! I cancelled my paypal account not so long ago. That means I wil no longer be able to buy or sell on ebay. It happens.

It's not that we don't mind - we, the people of the US, are pretty sick and tired of being beaten by Big Business - it's just that in this country the corporations pretty much own the government, and as a people we cannot bring ourselves together over our differences and stand up for our rights in a mass. The very thing which recommends the US to immigrants - the enormous diversity of our society - is also the thing which makes us so susceptible to being manipulated by Big Business. We're ripe for the "divide and conquer" tactic. As a seller, I am resigned to having to accept Paypal. That's what my buyers want to use. My feelings on the topic are irrelevant. Of course, for about a Nickel (in anyone's currency), I'd move to Oz.

Interestingly recently paypal offered a seller protection pacage for Aussie sellers. To be protected you must have proof of delivery and you are only covered if you send to verified accounts that are based in the USA. This means I am not covered buy seller protection if I send a package anywhere elese in the world....including Australia.

I hope that Otzion.com.au succeeds for Aussies because they deserve far better. For that matter, we all deserve better! That said, I'm afraid that ebay or any other online auction venue will only be as good as the quality of sellers and their wares. Policing auctions can only be a secondary and imperfect control to transactions--unless they involved a dedicated intermediary, such as with Heritage auctions. There are a lot of bad business models out there--including many "brick and mortar" dealers who overgrade or sell cleaned/damaged/fraudulent coins to unknowing collectors. To a lesser degree this also goes for dealers who overpay on their inventory and offer little incentive to buy. This is one reason I keep my eye out for good coins that I can pass on to collectors--to provide an alternative to the hazards of online purchasing.
