Hello List

I'm thinking of buying a stereo microscope to take pictures of my coins. I see several advertised with built in cameras or usb connections. I don't like the way my coins look when I scan them and when I try to use my camera they really stink. I have made some really good buys off of ebay because of some bad pictures. This is fine when buying but I don't want my pictures to stink if I'm selling.

Thanks Sam

I don't think a microscope will fit in an entire coin, only a very small part of it.

The very best pictures come from digital cameras. Perhaps if you post a photo taken with your present camera we could help with techniques to improve the shots.

Learjet--
I own both a stereo optical scope and a digital scope. At my QX5's lowest magnification (10x), I can only capture a fraction of any coin. I would suspect that's generally true for any digital microscope, but check around. As an update, I just read the Dino-lite scope will do full shots of coins.

To photograph coins, I use my Nikon D70s with the 60mm macro lens. I like the results, although the sensor/lens picks up every detail--which often accentuates wear. I hear there are other cameras out there that do a reasonably good job without the expense of my setup.

Here's a pic I took:

61, as an adjunct to what has been said already, good optic scopes offer the ability to adjust the field of view thru an add on lens. I have a Omana 3344 trinocular and love it. Mag is 7.5 to 45, if I remember correctly. By adding a Barlow lens adapter I double the field of view and cut the mag by 50%. No big deal, and I can photograph most any coin. I believe that these Barlow lens can be purchased in different adjustment levels, too. I am still learning to take pics with mine, but it is better than my scanner for sure and allows me to take pics of some very small coin features and have them be discernible.
