Any idea what could have caused this? I assume its post mint damage, but just want to hear what you guys have to say. I think it's weird that the off color is the same on both sides of the coin. I think it might be a planchet issue / copper plating issue What do you think?

It has to be a thin plating issue. John1's thread reference had some examples that showed a split plating around the letters. OP's coin indicates normal wear on exposed zinc high points that are in sync with coated areas. Need to know more about the plating process, anywhere we can get that info?

This is exactly what happened to three Cuzn cents I picked up off the floor of my basement while mopping up and set on a flat surface of my furnace. They probably sat there at least a couple years before I noticed them again. Mine became a bit convex/concave lifting the rim areas of the coins away from direct contact with the furnace surface and allowing more of the copper to remain. Heat infusion caused this on my coins. I can't speak for your coin or what happens to a coin that spends less or more time in such an environment. I would say if your coin is a bit convex/concave then the mystery is solved.

Hi, I came across this link about incomplete plating.

http://www.error-ref.com/incomplete_plating/

My coin looks similar in color, just the pattern is different. Also, the coin is flat as normal. In favor of the plating issue, if you notice under "one cent" there is no copper plating on the bottom edge. Normally, I see split plating along this area; but since there is no plating there is no splitting. Does that make sense?

Thanks for your feedback!
