I'm getting ready to complete a Washington quarter Dansco, all MS63 or better. Keep in mind I'm not a dealer, trader, investor or grader. I'm just a collector creating some legacy sets. I only need two more to complete the set, 32D & 36D. You can guess the $$$ amount at the MS63 or better grade level. I'm obviously shopping around. I need a reality check.

Question: Where would you go for the best coins at the best price? I know it's all subjective, just wanted your opinion. Thanks!

My first choice is always going to be a coin show.

Here is a place to start...

You may enjoy your album, but I would suggest that you consider NGC or PCGS for those, regardless of where you purchase.

Buying a cleaned raw coin would significantly detract from their value.

You can always keep them intact in their holders, photograph them, and insert the photos in your albums.

If you did get them from one of those TPG I would recommend Heritage, Stacks-Bowers, and Great Collections, in that order, for exceptional choices and the very top players as far as customer service is concerned.

In many cases, even with the buyer's fees, the price you pay will be less than ebay. Many dealers buy from them and retail them for a reasonable profit.

I'm with @jbuck on this. I just went to the Summer FUN show, and the pricing was very good on just about everything, selection was incredible, and in most cases, the dealers were very receptive to negotiating.

moxking-

Yes, the purchase of the 32D & 36D will definitely be NGC or PCGS. No raw coins for me at this level. I'm not a grader....don't want any fake, cleaned or problem coins. I'm actually planning on doing the reverse of what you suggested. I'm going to take a picture of the entire slab and a close-up of the coin (both sides). Break it out, put the coin in the album, print out the picture and put/scotch tape the NGC or PCGS label/bar-code on the picture. I have a plastic clear three ring sleeve in the back of the album. That's where it's going.

Yes, I'm looking at Heritage and trying to learn and digest exactly how it works. I've never used them before. I have bought on ebay before. I'm guessing it's probably similar to ebay. Thanks!

Beefer518-

I would love to have gotten down to that show. I guess that would add to the cost of the coin......travel and motel.

Thanks.

Tom, I've noticed some coin shows, depending on the locality, over price everything! Has anyone else noticed that?

I do not go for the best coins. I always go for what I consider to be the best value for money. I do that, even for low value coins below say $10, in my LCS retail coin shop.

I am fortunate enough to attend the view days for Australia's leading public auction series. When you bid on a lot that may be estimated at $1,000 or more, due diligence is essential.
Very important to see in hand before considering to bid.
Quite often, I will preview the catalog lots on line, then change my mind when I see the lot in hand.

It is this sort of experience that makes me less keen about ebay. That option is denied to the buyer.

I tend to bid low, and be happy to miss out on being successful, which helps keep over spending, under control. That strategy also helps to beat high premiums, especially when the ratio lowest to highest bids may triple or more.
$4 million worth of coins are up for current auction starting on Monday July 25th. I won't be attending, but I have lodged single priced written bids, which is my normal way of operating.

Some love the thrill of the drama at auction. I definitely DON'T !

Mark-

I haven't noticed that at shows. I'm thinking coin shows should or would be less expensive. I know that the on-line stores are real expensive!

Yes - Iv'e see that but of course they are trying to make money and they don't give a crap about the buyer unless you have a Personal connection with them. I have a friend who owns a coin shop that sells me ASE's for fantastic prices right out of the tubes! No spots, or hits!

Ussid18:
Noble Numismatics Sydney, Monday 25th July.
The auction will attract many international bidders live on line.

Noble Numismatics in the past has auctioned significant American, such as $50 Pan Pac octagonal and round pair, and a complete set of classic commemorative Halves in MS 63 or better.

Top end American coins are much more usually unslabbed.

As you would expect, top end Australian coins are one of the cores of the Australian public auction business scene.
