Hello, I have been a long time lurker, and I was hoping to get a few opinions about this coin. I have just started to broaden my horizons by venturing into Asian coins, but I know very little about Japanese coins from the Tokugawa except for cash coins. Are these silver bu rather common? It is my perception that this is an EF, but what do you guys think? Image: JapaneseSilverBuobv.jpg47.9 KB Image: JapaneseSilverBurev.jpg52.31 KB Edited by Archraz 04/26/2008 12:51 am

I have one of these, so they're not super-rare. They're listed in the Krause world coin catalogue as KM/C# 16a, CV (in my 2004 edition) $18 in VG up to $35 in EF. Personally, I'd grade yours VF, but I'm a fairly strict grader. The mintage figure quoted in the catalogue is 11,399,000 though most of these would have been melted down to make "western-style" coins.

Well, my scanner makes this coin look worse than it actually does, but I may be a bit optimistic in my grading as well. Does anyone know of any decent websites which provide some info on this type of coin?

Hmmm. Zeno.ru has a small page of sample types, but not much discussion. Googling "ichibu gin" brings up some sale sites, some forums and some miscellaneous discussion. This Yahoo Answers page, for instance, gives the character translations. If there are any really good sites on these coins, they're probably in Japanese. Copy and paste the three characters "ichibu gin" from that Yahoo page back into Google, and a whole bunch of Chinese and Japanese sites appear, many of which appear to be about early postage stamps.

Check this site out: http://www.imes.boj.or.jp/cm/englis.../history.htmNote: click on the number on the left. It's pretty small but they are links. Ichibu gin aren't that rare and you can still pick them up under 50USD ish. I got mine at around 25USD or so.

Thanks for the info and links, Sap & gxseries! Yeah, $50US was what I paid for mine, so I'm glad that I paid about the going rate. How did you get your ichibu for so cheap, gxseries? Did you get it a long time ago when prices were lower, or is it a lower grade, or did you just get quite a bargain?

Archraz, I got mine quite time ago so the prices are a bit outdated.
