I was not in the service so hoping those of you who were (who have my great respect) can help identify this piece. I read the background of Sgt. Gonzalez and know the USS Gonzalez was named after him, but I cannot find this piece to understand where it fits in. I'm also wondering if it's silver.

Thanks,

Mike

That's the story link above.
and I am going to guess that this silver medal was available when the ship was commissioned in 1996.

I was in the US Navy many years ago. Any sailor who served on that ship would love to have that medallion.
I don't know for sure if it is silver or not. I would think it is. It should be protected. Navy ship memorabilia is quite collectible. I cannot seem to be able to find another online, so I would imagine it is not common.
I think it is a good thing to have.
Rest in Peace

Hue was... a , Semper Fi 1970-1974 USMC

That is a challenge coin, most likely not silver you'd have to have it checked(jeweler). These were given out to those attending the ceremonies of the Commissioning of mthe ship. May have been a sailor or guest who it was given to..
