Any thoughts on this coin set? I think it looks great, but is it worth spending $235? Do these type of sets maintain their value over time?

Just FYI: The set is an ongoing topic of discussion here: August 2017 RCM Release Quote: Do these type of sets maintain their value over time? The full silver proof sets from 2012 to the present are currently holding their value, but it's impossible to say what the future will bring for these sets. Most of the proof sets from 2011 back (the ones with a silver dollar and base metal versions of the other coins) have seen their prices on the secondary market fall over the years.

Quote: I think it looks great, but is it worth spending $235? Do these type of sets maintain their value over time? As someone growing up in the 1960's and remembering the Centennial year of 1967, this set is a must have for me. But for someone born after 1967 there is not a lot of relevance. Unless you are a coin collector of coins from that era, is it worth spending $235 is something only you can answer. As for maintaining value over, it is a definite no. The mintage of 20,000 is way too high for that to happen. The 2012 Proof Set with the last penny is going for 50% on ebay right now. You can get proof sets for a big discount no matter what year it is.

Being not really 'low-cost' set and large mintage, will be hype, but from a side of the coin collectors only (Canada, US and Europe). But the 20K of mintage will handle the demand.

Seems unlikely that the set will appreciate over time but the 2017 Sp. ed. Home and Native land set sold out quickly and currently sells at a premium in ebay. That is probably a short term bump but it is impossible to say for sure what will happen.

2017 special set is better than this one. This one belongs to 1967

Yeah, I have thoughts on it. Now I have another nickel I have to add to my set and it won't be cheap. That will make 6 that I know of that were minted with the 2017 date.

This set just became available to me today as I have no Canadian Mint special privileges. I jumped on it right away and I am one who rarely orders non circulating coins. They just don't normally appeal to me.
I was in junior high school in 1967. I had just a couple years before, started collecting Canadian coins. I still have the circulating coins from 1967 that I saved. My dad had the special cased set with the gold coin that I admired. My dad's birthday is July first. Sadly he passed away in June two weeks before his 86th birthday. A couple years ago I did not even think he would make it to 2017 so he did well. I just wish they would have released this set earlier in the year so he could have seen it. He was a coin collector to the end but stopped going to coin shows about two years ago when walking became difficult. My mom has his 1967 set.
The only thing I would do differently with this design, is I would have made it an 1867-2017 Canada 150 celebration, not a 50th anniversary Colville. Alex would have still been honoured and it would have been a more fitting tribute. I have said all along that these are the coins that should have been used as circulating 2017 coins (not in pure silver of course, and maybe could have used the one cent design on the $2 coin).
I do not care if this set increases in value or how many are produced. I am purchasing it for sentimental reasons alone. I feel that all of these types of sets are sold for about $100 too much given the couple ounces of silver, but in this case the Mint has me hooked. I look forward to getting this in the mail. Does anyone know if they are shipping soon?

Firstly punman, my condolences for your loss. I share your grief having lost both of my parents in the past two years. I agree and noted that was my one quibble with the set; should have been 1867-1967 for Canada150 instead of a 50 year commemoration of the 1967 coins. As for shipping: they were suppose to start shipping today and in fact my cc was pre-authorized yesterday. My mint.ca order showed it was 'processing' yesterday but now it shows 'new order'. That said, I still think these will ship very soon.

Well said, Punman. RCM told me 5-10 days for this set. I can't remember if that was ship by or receipt, however.

Start saving up for the re-issue of the $20 in gold. I guess 5 9s. I will, but won't buy if they make too many. How many are too many?

Punman Sorry for the recent passing of your father Bravo on him for full life. Colville's superb simple design will look great in hand as proof.

@Nickel Guy Quote: Now I have another nickel I have to add to my set and it won't be cheap. That will make 6 that I know of that were minted with the 2017 date. A local coin dealer (CAC) is already breaking up the sets and selling them individually. Total cost combined runs $282.00, so you would be crazy not to by the RCM set unless you were looking to own one or two of the coins. Your prized .9999 nickel will set you back $20.00. Originally in the August New Release thread I had balked at buying this set but finally caved for a few reasons. A) it's the only premium set I entertained the thought of buying this year. B) the gold plated $20 (first for a proof set) and 1 cent C) these designs have never been offered in this finish or detail before and are (except for the $20)the original weights and sizes. D) the lighter gold plated $20 will easily fetch $75 -100 or in the worst case scenario face value which is not bad for a quarter + ounce of silver! E) passed on everything else for this month and haven't spent a cent since July 1. Regardless of the dates, this is the dream set for those who cannot afford the original. I ordered it last night and am waiting to see if my 'rep' is going to put the request in or not. Says out of stock but there couldn't have been that many orders overnight. The detail on the wildlife is amazing but the mirrored finish from one set that I looked at leaves a little something to be desired.

Quote: Regardless of the dates, this is the dream set for those who cannot afford the original. Very well said. now, when we understand, why the set worth to be purchased (remember also about RCM buyers remorse period), interesting to know, what are the reasons, causing people not to buy the set .

Proof Nut, please PM me a link to that dealer. $20.00 is about right for what my recent silver Canada issues cost, some more and some less and I of course will be getting one. Thank you! edit:Sorry I see you point to CAC ... I'll look for them. Thanks Late edit: Can't find them but did find one I won't buy on ebay for almost 50 bucks shipped.

Nickel Guy - PM sent.
CAC in Kitchener has 7 of the silver nickels in stock at the moment and as high as 10 of some of the others. Guess they broke up at least 10 sets!
