I have decided what I think is the most outrageous--I have decided to give a runner-up surprise prize as well.

I know many of you will be outraged by my decision, but since it's my contest and there were so many outrages I read every one over again and decided I would award first place to the one that stuck in my craw so much that I couldn't forget it--or let it go. It's a strange pick, I know, but the winner is...ta da...

ARTHRENE for "Error,Heart stamped penny, RARE" not just because someone was dumb and or devious enough to list it, but also because two people were dumb enough to bid it up to $4.25 and also because there is a ridiculously, outrageously negligent website that perpetuates such unfettered lunacy.

Arthrene, pm me your address and prize preference!

Runner-up and winner of a super secret prize is...

ERICNH for reminding us of the outrage that is the US Mint!

Ericnh, pm me your address and I will send you your prize as well.

Thanks all for playing and coming up with such outrageous outrages!!

Contest to Find the Most Outrageous Internet Coin Auction, Sale, or Offering of the Next Month

Why this contest: Recently I helped a person get out of a sale on ebay in which he purchased an '1842 Seated Liberty dollar.' The dollar in question happened to have a motto over the eagle on the reverse. If you don't know why this is a problem, I can almost guarantee you are not qualified to enter this contest. I alerted the buyer who turned out to be a newbie coin collector, and he was able to get his money back. I'd like to think that I helped the hobby in some small way by helping this collector from experiencing his own outrage. I did not receive any reward aside from the satisfaction of being able to help--but now I would like to reward you for the time you spend surfing the internet looking at coins by awarding a great prize for your Outrage of the Month!

Date: This contest runs from the time it gets posted until the same time of day on May 26, 2008.

The prize: $1 face value of United States 90% silver coins--the winner may choose dimes/quarters/halves/a dollar or a mystery envelope.

How it Works: You may enter as many times as you like. You may also choose what constitutes an outrage to you in your own personal opinion, for example: egregious overgrading; $1,000,000 common Jefferson nickel on ebay; calling a ubiquitous 'error' (1955 'poor man's doubled die') a great rarity--whatever causes you outrage and/or brings disgrace to the hobby--in your opinion. Provide as much information as you can about the item/s, sales pitch, website, whatever you find unsavory...and the reason you felt compelled to nominate it. Keep in mind that if you provide a link the link might not always be there, so the more detailed information you can provide along with your rationale for outrage, the better your chances.

The judging: All judging will be completely subjective and arbitrary, and based not simply on the enormity of the outrage, but also on the reasons you put forward as to why the listing or classified is, for lack of a better word, bad for numismatics.

If this doesn't make sense, please let me know, I am just making it up as I go along, so contest rules may be subject to adjustment based on feedback/entries.

Now I know you've been outraged in the past, so for one month at least, you can try to turn that outrage to your own advantage--now get out there and get OUTRAGED.

Good luck everybody and thanks for all you do to make this hobby and this site so enjoyable.

Wow, great start, your second one gets additional bonus points for the concomitant outrage committed against the English language.

Let's all start paying key date prices for common date coins!

http://cgi.ebay.com/1915-D-Lincoln-...em_W0QQitemZ190217026964QQihZ009QQcategoryZ39456QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
"1915-D Lincoln Cent - Blazing RED Flawless PQ Gem! - US $5,100.00
One of a handful of coins from my website that I am featuring on ebay this week as a special. The Lincoln Cent market is really hot right now, and who knows how much more these prices will go up when the 2009 rush really goes into high gear. I have many listed, so check them out even just to admire if not to buy.
This coin is so flawless that I am somewhat at a loss for words. It is about as close as you can get to perfection when it comes to early Lincolns. The strike is razor sharp, as sharp as you'll ever see one of these. Both sides are bright red and unbelievably pristine. Many don't even make it out of the mint this nice, let alone stay so mark-free for nearly 100 years. This is an outstanding high end piece. It's quite an incredible to sight to behold when seen in-hand, fit for the finest of collections."

"1913-S Lincoln Cent-FULL RED GEM-Razor Sharp Perfection - US $4,300.00
An immaculate, pristine specimen from my website, offered on ebay as a special this week. This coin is quite impressive. As you may know, 1913-S is considerably rare in gem red. In fact, this is the only one that I have had in quite some time. I am in love with this coin, to the point where I might want to seek professional help. The strike is so sharp and full that even the fields have that frosty look only seen on a fraction of the earliest Lincolns, up to around 1916. The mint luster is gentle and unimpeded by any distractions. That is the most rewarding aspect of this coin -- the lack of blemishes. No trace of carbon, no major contact marks, nothing! There is light cabinet friction that almost goes undetected. That's the extent of any notable imperfections...seriously, there is barely anything to report. This is the type of coin that can bring a collection to the next level."

hey arthene, saw your #1 hobby as soccer, You play?

Haven't seen any outrageous coins, but I've seen someone trying to sell a phone number for $1 000 000, that would win if this went further than coins!

What a great idea for a contest! That SLQ is classic.

"The price listed is somewhat negotiable. Only serious buyers respond."
But where is the serious seller?

Kurt--doesn't 99,999 sound so much cheaper than 100,000?

arthrene--another good one, but you forgot to mention that the seller also makes these items simultaneously available on his website. Also, he's obviously heard of PCGS since he's selling a PCGS certified coin, so you have to wonder why he's afraid of getting these incredible PQ coins slabbed as well?

Took me a minute to realize what you were talking about. Soccer isn't my hobby, it was a guess in trdhrdr007's recent contest. One of the prizes depicted soccer on the reverse so I figured it would be a good guess. I don't play and I don't follow it.

How about this "rare" "error"?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Error-Heart-sta...RE_W0QQitemZ270232196447QQihZ017QQcategoryZ259QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
"Error,Heart stamped penny, RARE - US $4.00
RARE heart stamped penny, in great condition, I've never seen anything like it, if you have any further questions please contact me."

It also says that the coin is proof and from the denver mint. The pictures are small but I think it's actually from the Philadelphia mint.

Another one from the same seller I just like the description. Mint marks really aren't that hard to find...
http://cgi.ebay.com/set-of-three-19...rs_W0QQitemZ270231932307QQihZ017QQcategoryZ41103QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
"set of three 1964 JFK silver half dollars - US $2.99
set of three JFK silver half dollars, mint unknown. if you have any further questions about this item please contact me. thank you"

(Can anyone tell I'm having fun yet?)

For starters paying $10 for 5 world coins sucks.
Secondly, ever heard of spell check/reading over your stuff before posting it? Typos and spelling errors have been bolded.

Silver,Gold,Nickel&Copper, Grab Bag! Buy 5 get 1 free! - US $9.99

GRAB BAG!

MOSTLY WORLD COINS and some US coins GRAB BAGS!

Said to be some of the Best Grab bags on ebay. For the money!

5 to 10 world coins and a chance to get some GOLD $9.99, Buy 5 get one free!

You have a much better chance of winning the gold then winning the loto!

<><><><><><><><><><>..TREASURE HUNT.. <><><><><><><><><><>
These types of things are fun for EVERYONE even the most advanced collectors.

Good luck to you all :)

I have gathered together a huge amount of world coin's over the many years, mostly though buying out other peoples coin collection. Being as I know very little about coinage outside the United States [Then why the heck are you spending all your money buying other peoples stuff?]. I have decided to Sell this stock pile of world coins off in small 5 to 10 coin grab bags for only $9.99 plus shipping and just like the US COIN GRAD BAGS I WAS SO WELL KNOWN FOR I have contained to up the stakes. I have added a few gold $5.00 coins into the mix and as well as a few world gold piece's [If he really knows so little about world coinage, can we really trust him that he knows they're gold?. There is also a good number 24kt gold flake tubes in the mix. I have these little grab bags all made up ( I SPENT HOURS OPEN HOURS MAKING THESE UP.) Basically the same rules apply as my US COIN grab bags. About 1 in 70 has gold in them. The only difference here other then the price being less then half the cost of my US Grab bags is this time I put all the grab bags into a box with a hole in the top big enough to fit my hand, taped it down and shook it. :) I'm even going to turn my head when I load the envelopes. I don't even want to know who's getting the goldies. THESE GRAB BAGS ARE 100% MADE UP AT RANDOM. Now again I want to clear it up. THESE GRAB BAGS ARE MOSTLY WORLD COINS, WITH ABOUT A ONE IN SEVENTY CHANCE OF GETTING A GOLD COIN AND ABOUT A ONE IN 9 OR 10 CHANCE OF GETTING A TUBE OF GOLD. These are not expensive grab bags they are world coin grab bags and practically
all of them are older. The newest things I saw when making these up was a few coins from the 1980's and a couple of random newer eruos. But most of the stuff in these are from the late 1800's to the mid 1900's. Being as I just DO NOT CARE ABOUT WORLD coins the way I do about US coinage [Yet he takes the time to buy them from all these other people?. WHO KNOWS WHAT YOU'LL GET. You might find something worth hundreds and if you do PLEASE let others know. Thank you for looking and reading the ridiculously long description. Good luck, happy bidding and please look at my other items. You'll notice 99% of what I sell are US coins.
Id like to say it CLEAR AS DAY [Please stop yelling at us.]. When it come's to grab bags. Not everyone is always going to be a 100% completely happy with what they get, But again these are only $7.99 [The price is $9.99] and you are getting who know's what from who know's where. If anything you have something to do with your kids Not really my idea of a family activity. Hey kids look...five coins. Great we've seen them now what? Not quite the same as a good roll search.. Maybe you'll learn something new and so will they. I remember when I was a little boy and started collecting coins. I was always excited to get coins from another country. Thinking wow these look weird. :)
Best wish's and good luck!
Coins have always been a good investment as history has shown [Always? I wonder which history he's referring to. This implies that all coins will go up in value. Is it still a good investment if they aren't worth anything until 100 years after you die?. As well as a great hobby for children and adults alike. If you don't already collect coins "start." [I have no idea why that's in quotes In recent years there have been numerous changes to US ans WORLD currency's and coins. In turn [needs a comma here] older money is being reclaimed by the government's and destroyed to make new money's, as it always has been [Always? So, our government is melting down all of our silver coins to make more silver coins?. What's that mean to you? It means if you might have something that is no longer in circulation and it becomes a collectable and becomes worth more if not much more then its face value [Stuff in circulation is still collectible.. Hence why holding on to your old money is a smart idea. I learned that a long time ago. Coin collecting has grow over 40% in the past 10 years. Its only gonna get bigger. More people [i[insert comma][/i] more money, more changes. If your already a collector, then here is a great way to add to the over all value of you collection."

Lol. Sorry, I like English, read a ton and am studying Linguistics.

Actually the fake chinese coins for 99,999 seem to be a "public service" announcement as he is showing what fakes are on ebay. He says they are not for sale. I think the price is to keep someone from bidding in error. BUT......that assumption might not apply to ebay. Or did I read it wrong?
