My-Milestone-Contest!

In celebration of my recent 1500-post milestone and thanks to all who make this place great, I'm holding a little contest.
The one who answers three questions correctly will win this coin: a 1944-C Newfoundland 10c piece.

What's really cool about this coin is that a Canadian Coin News article discusses why the original mintage figure
of 286,504 is incorrect; the author calculates it's closer to 56,177. It's a great little prize for a Newfoundland collector!

Without further ado, the three questions are:
1. What is the earliest known European name for the Newfoundland area?
2. Who probably give it that name
3. Why was it named that?

Good luck!

IIRC, Newfoundland (Vinland) <> Labrador (Markland).

I know I am late... but my number three is different.

1. Vinland
2. Leif Ericson
3. Wine land or pasture land, there is some debate.

1. Terra Nova
2. John Cabot
3. because it was a newly discovered(found) land

Some believe Newfoundland might be the island called Vinland as referenced in Norse documents, but since Vinland's location has yet to be verified this remains a matter of considerable debate.

jbuck--congrats!

For 3. "wine-land" is roughly the translation of the word, so let's call that a win! Apparently, Leif Erickson's Vinland has Newfoundland beat by a few centuries, but I imagine calling it "Previously Found Land" hasn't quite the same ring to it.

Jbuck, PM me your addy, and your new coin will be on its way!

Ken_3567 and jbakic: you had partial correct answers, so you'll be the two runner-ups! I have some other extra NFLD cents that I'll send you guys. PM me.

Thanks for playing, and congrats to all the runner-ups too!
