Dear halfabustisbetter, I'm an Aussie and you stated at the start of this thread, 'I am probably not qualified to enter this competition'. I was wondering if I entered an Australian ebay outragous offer would you feel qualified to judge it? regards,

New $5 Five Dollar Bill Strap Star Note (Uncirculated) For sale is a Brand New Uncirculated $5 bill. Strap ($500) of brand new five dollar bill ***** STAR NOTE*****. http://cgi.ebay.com/New-5-Five-Doll...ed_W0QQitemZ a href= https://www.coincommunity.com/go/link.asp?target=https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/180238830515 target= _blank rel= nofollow 180238830515 /a QQihZ008QQcategoryZ40033QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem The serial numbers are IA 71213601A thru IA 71213700A. I think this guy missed the fact that a star note has stars in the serial number The least he could have done would be to use a magic marker and turn the A into a star.

It's ancient history now, but I've always though the Mattski Affair pretty outrageous. Quick precis for those who weren't around at the time: A fellow joins the CCF forum asking about some Australian coins he's claimed to have found. Turns out there's a 1930 penny amongst them (a classic Australian rarity). Eventually he shows pics. Forum members (including myself) ooh and aah, and counsel waiting for expert opinion on it's authenticity. Eventually, some experts do indeed post, and denounce it as a fake. So what does Mattski do with his 1930 penny he's just been told is fake? Sells it on ebay as "probably genuine", of course. And in his ebay listing, he says he asked a coin forum about his coin. And to prove it, he splices HTML copied from the forum, almost the entire thread, straight into his listing, right up to just before the post by Guest1595. He edited out some of the skeptical comments, too. Curiously, the original item is still visible in ebay's database of deleted items. Needless to say, Bobby and the forum members involved were less than impressed at CCF being used to give "street cred" to a fake.

I have never read about this Mattski affair until now. I always wonder about that sort of scam when somebody appears here with a huge "find" and draws out pages of comments. That resulting auction was particularly egregious in how they misleadingly cited commentary from the board.

We don't know what it is but we're selling it anyway. http://cgi.ebay.com/RAREST-US-WALKI...OD_W0QQitemZ380024387703QQihZ025QQcategoryZ524QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem "RAREST US WALKING LIBERTY $.50 SILVER COIN ERROR IN GOD UNDISCOVERED ERROR 1942-D DDO? DIE-CRACK? LAMINATION? ! THIS AUCTION IS FOR A VERY RARE - UNDISCOVERED - 1942-D US $.50 COIN WITH AN ERROR IN THE MOTTO IN "GOD". THERE HAVE ONLY BEEN A FEW ERRORS EVER IDENTIFIED IN THIS COIN SERIES, THIS ONE MAY QUITE POSSIBLY BE THE RAREST ERROR EVER DISCOVERED IN THE WALKING LIBERTY SERIES 1916-1947 !! THERE IS CLEARLY A BAR DIAGNOL THROUGH THE "O" IN GOD. WAS THIS THE RESULT OF A DEFECTIVE DIE-CRACK OR IS THIS A DOUBLE-DIE ? OR WAS THIS CAUSED BY LAMINATION, AS THERE IS A SMALL DIVITT ABOVE THE O. THIS COIN IS NOT GRADED OR CERTIFIED, BUT THE ERROR IS APPARENT TO THE NAKED EYE. WHILE WE CANNOT GAURANTEE A GRADE TO THIS COIN, WE CAN GAURANTEE WHAT IS APPARENT IN PLAIN SIGHT. THIS COIN HAS BEEN IN THE FAMILY SAFE FOR MANY YEARS AND WENT UNDISCOVERED UNTIL I WAS TAKING PHOTOS FOR ebay AND NOTICED IT !! CHECK OUT THE DIGITAL PHOTOS & DON'T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO BID ON THIS RARE & TREASURED SILVER, ERROR COIN !!"

"RAREST US WALKING LIBERTY $.50 SILVER COIN ERROR IN GOD" Looks like a tiny lamination error to me. I'm sure it's the only one! The real outrage: 23 bids on a $6 coin to over $250 Nice one!
