Hi, All, I keep my Lincoln Cent collection in three ring binders,in 2x2s, so, what I would like to know is, how many 1982 different varieties are there?

I think I read somewhere on the Forum that there are 6?

Could you list the differences, I know about the Lrg.& Small date ones, but, what about the others?

Thanks,

there are 7 varieties:

1982-D Large Date Zinc
1982-D Large Date Copper
1982-D Small Date Zinc
1982-P Large Date Zinc
1982-P Large Date Copper
1982-P Small Date Zinc
1982-P Small Date Copper

The dates are easy to tell apart, but besides dropping the coin on the table, I'm not sure how else to tell whether it was made out of copper or zinc. If you do drop it on a table the zinc ones will make a thud sound while the copper ones will ring.
Rest in Peace

There are actually 7 varieties. In the middle of 1982 the composition was changed from the copper cent to the copper plated zinc cent. The varieties are:

1982 large date copper
1982 sm date copper
1982 D large date copper
1982 large date Zinc
1982 small date zinc
1982 D large date zinc
1982 D small date zinc

There was no 1982 D small date copper officially produced. This would be an error coin and I do check my coins looking for one. You can tell the difference between copper and zinc by weight. copper cents weigh 3.1 grams and zinc cents weigh 2.7 grams.

If you don't have a scale you can make a cheap balance with a popsicle stick or tongue depressor by gluing a cent you know is zinc (1983 to date) on one end of the stick and gluing something on the opposite side in the middle for it to pivot on. Then when you place a coin on the stick at the opposite end of the glued coin the heavier coppper coins will make your balance go down. You can sometimes find these being sold by coin dealers. Good luck.

The weight difference is actually 3.1 for copper vs. 2.5 for zinc so either a digital scale that goes to the tenth of a gram works well or the popsicle method mentioned above.
Rest in Peace

Unfortunately a magnet doesn't stick to either copper or zinc cents. But good thinking.

Supposedly you can tell the difference between copper and zinc by the sounds they make when you drop them edge first onto a hard surface such as a table. This doesn't work for me, though.
