I saw this on eBay, and the alarm bells went off. In particular, there's something about face of Victoria that just isn't right. I've seen a few India gold Mohurs with the same look (hint: the eye shape). Those who collect Aus gold sovereigns, what's your take?

Here's a pic of the coin in question:

I know nothing about Sovereigns, but I'd certainly proceed with utmost caution. To my eyes, the nose, mouth, chin & neck all appear different. If you can, hold off till someone with experience in Sovereigns posts an opinion.

There were different hair types for the young head, but I'm not sure if there were also facial differences.

Thanks Nancy and 1964S! I had similar reservations on the facial features, and now I can describe what I'm seeing: Compare the shape of the upper eyelid and the width of the bridge of the nose from the eye. I haven't seen a bulgy-eyed portrait of Victoria like that on an authenticated coin. But maybe it's just a particular die? Just curious here--I'm not about to spend $11K on a gold coin!

I collect Australian shield sovs. To the best of my ability, and as far as I can tell from the scans, everything is correct. IMO it looks like the real thing.

It has all the features that match the era for the second portrait type that ran from 1881 - 1887.

You will see differences in shadow play if you compare a scan with a digital photo.

I have to admit though, I don't have the 1887. It's one date I will have to skip due to the price. It's almost worth as much as the rest of the shields put together.

A couple of websites currently have pictures if you want to do more comparisons. Just be aware that no two pictures will have the same shadow angles. http://www.kjc.com.au/ go to Australian gold coin section on page 4 they have an 1887M.

Winsor have a very clear picture here. http://www.winsor.com.au/gold-coin-...cfm?coin=142

Thanks again...it will only be an intellectual exercise--and not one for my wallet.

Again, thanks everyone...I admit I've gotten rather spooked by ebay. I generally only buy from trusted dealers now.
