There are 2 varieties. One that's 80% silver and one that's 50% silver. Any distinguishing marks to tell the difference?

Hi Doug
The only way of distinguishing this coin is by the weight the silver dime is .800 silver and the other one is .500 silver & copper.Unless I'm mistaken this is the way to tell the difference between the two coins

I'm pretty sure they are identical in weight, and there is no non-destructive way to tell the difference. That is why dealers will sell them as if they were 65% silver. Believe me, if they had a way to charge you full value for the 80% silver, they would.

It sure doesn't make sense that they would weigh the same. The silver is heavier/ounce than copper, so a difference in silver of 30%, should be heavier. Not that much, but on a digital scale, there should be a difference. INHO. Dick

Has anyone verified the weights 2.33 grams (80% silver dime) and 2.07 grams (50% silver dime)?
Was wondering if someone can give us the weights for the 1967 80% silver quarter vs. the 1967 50% silver quarter? Thank you.

How can it be 2.4 if the book said (according to your 4/27/08 post) its 2.33 grams?
The 5.9 gram quarter, is that the 80% or 50% silver?
Half and dollar are fine because there was only one silver half and one silver dollar in 1967.

Thanks for your input Andre. Both 1967 dimes are listed at 2.33 but your scale says 2.40. What can I say? Today's silver melt value of the 80% is $1.05 and the 50% is .66
I'm trying to understand the silver value of Canadian coins because I passed up an opportunity to buy 5 Canadian silver dollars for $25 and I don't want that to happen to me again.
