11707 total between the four portraits. Only the last portrait (2003-2004) was issued in PL, the rest are proof only. Sorry, but I don't have a breakdown for each one.

The 2004 50c coin I am getting is from a 2004 PL gift set. I assume it has the new effigy.

Yes it should be the new effigy witch started in 2003 for all new coins. The only year that you have the new an old effigy is 2003.

I just got this set and I will not buy a gift set again. It is a major hassle trying to bust the coins out of the hard plastic packaging. For those unfamiliar, its similarly packaged like the US 2007 mint set.

I just took a few coins out of the set and I will do the others later when I am ready to assemble the other sets.
