I thought Victoria Day or Empire Day as it became in some parts of the Empire such as Australia was on May 24th.

In Canada, it's always a Monday, and if the 24th doesn't fall on a Monday, then it's the Monday immediately before. Since next Monday would be the 26th, today is our holiday. No complaints here.

Quote:Here's to our great old Queen. You are not talking to those on south beach or from Kings Cross are you? Really Victoria is well known in history for so many things. Even the "era" was named after her If you get the day as a holiday - enjoy!

And, also if you have got a bunch of coins, with her profile on them, there probably, worth something.

G'day, quote: "Even the "era" was named after her" - and two states of Australia; and the former capital of the Northern Territory.
quote: "Empire Day ..." - when I was a boy in ... ummm ... Victoria, we had a half-day holiday for Empire Day; and another for Queen's Birthday. Before I finished primary school, Empire Day was dropped, and QB became a full-day holiday.

Thanks for clearing that up. The reason I know is my grandfather told me his father celebrated his birthday on Empire Day 24th May.

Happy Victoria day to those CCF'ers with the queen on their coins! Out of curiosity, are there holidays for the other monarchs? I can only imagine Victoria's reign was a special era...

G'day, quote: "are there holidays for the other monarchs?" - The Queen's birthday is, in fact, 21 April 1926.
Australia (except Western Australia), observes the Queen's Birthday on the second Monday in June, marking it with a public holiday. W.A. celebrates in Sept~Oct.
why is there a discrepancy between the actual birthday, and the official celebration of it ? - "The day has been celebrated [in Australia] since 1788, when Governor Arthur Phillip declared a holiday to mark the birthday of King George III. Until 1936 it was held on the actual birthday of the Monarch, but after the death of King George V it was decided to keep the date at mid-year."
Curiously, Fiji is a Republic, but they still observe Queen's Birthday.
