Sending stuff to ANACS today, but one is in a basement slab. What's the best way to crack it out without damaging the coin?

Let ANACS do it, if you don't have a Dremel.

Wrap a towel or other heavy cloth around it, tightly. Hold it with the longest part horizontal to a solid surface. A vise is great, but hand held is fine. Tap the top long edge of the slab with a hammer until it crackers.

What is a basement slab and why do you want to crack it?

Dshea - A "basement slab" is literally something made in the basement, but in practice a slab produced by a company not generally recognized as among the best 6-7 legitimate grading companies going back over time.

I just put a sticky note on the slab that says 'please crack and grade'. ANACS has always done this for me. The only reason I'd crack one before sending it in is if I thought it needed an acetone bath first.

Go to Home Depot. Buy a $25 vise. Wrap in paper towel, slowly tighten until it starts to break. Rotate 90 degrees and repeat. Shortly you will be able to simply separate the halves. The keyword here is safely. You can do it with a hammer, but not safely, either for yourself or the coin.

Depending on the basement slab it may not even be sealed and you can just pop it open.

I use either a hammer or a vice. The new NGC slabs with the bendable plastic are the hardest to crack. A heavy duty pincher is also useful.
