Do Carbon Spots On Copper Lower A TPG Grade?

BigSilver Pillar of the Community United States 2843 Posts	Posted 08/08/2017 3:23 pm I saw a top pop NGC coin yesterday with a few carbon spots. Not huge, but visible. My question is - were they there beforegrading and NGC still felt the coin graded what they graded it? Or can I assume that the carbon cane after the grading? Also, what percent red is required to get an RD grade instead of RB. Report this Post to the Staff

moxking Rest in Peace United States 17900 Posts	Posted 08/08/2017 3:34 pm Red is achieved at 95% or more red. Red/Brown covers a huge area from 5%-94% red. Spots can occur after encapsulation, but it is also difficult to establish that without knowing the coin or seeing good pictures. An MS-70 ASE with spots almost certainly happened after encapsulation. An 1865 Two Cent probably had spots long before encapsulation. Report this Post to the Staff
sel_69l Bedrock of the Community Australia 21786 Posts	Posted 08/08/2017 7:04 pm Carbon spots are NOT carbon, otherwise they could be easily removed. They ARE in fact, localized spots of corrosion. The black is either copper sulfide, or copper oxide, or a combination of both. They are FAR LESS destructive than bronze disease. They should lower the grade, but I suspect that most TPGraders only note them as 'comments'. Carbon spots detract from eye appeal. Report this Post to the Staff

afewmorecents Valued Member United States 97 Posts	Posted 08/20/2017 5:50 pm Now that the guarantee is removed from slabbed copper, the TPGS's have become very tolerant of CORROSION SPOTS. They can now grade a coin 66 red and not worry as only the submitter knows they were on the coin when he sent it. Future owners will think it happened after slabbing! Report this Post to the Staff
