For some time now I have been putting together a collection of Parthian thanks to the help of Bob L. I was planning on making a large post once I completed the collection, but it's been a bit slow around here lately. So I figured I would post some.

The two coins I will post today are billon tetradrachms of Vologases IV king of Parthia from 147 - 191 AD. The only coin in the Parthian series that are dated are the tetradrachms. So these two are dated. Tetradrachms were only struck at one location in the empire, at Seleukia.

Vologases IV 147-191 AD. in 155 AD Parthia conflict and the Roman empire had a dispute for control over Armenia. This lead into a war from 162 - 166 AD. Parthia was one of Romes worse enemies.

At first the war went well for Vologases forces, but not for long. The Romans recovered from their defeats and counter attacked. They invaded the Parthian empire destroying the city of Seleucia and burning the palace at the capitol city at Ctesiphon to the ground in 165 AD.

A revolt in 190 AD by Osroes II who tried to set up a rival kingdom in Media added to Vologases IV troubles. In 191 AD his son Volgases V 191 - 208 AD, succeed his father and put down the revolt.

Nice work Ron. When you say that you will "complete the collection", are you envisioning a coin from every ruler of Parthia or something else?

So nice to see these in your collection, Ron, and to sense your growing enthusiasm for Parthian silvers and billons. I've been collecting them for a quarter of a century and my enthusiasm has only increased in that time. I've encountered a number of naysayers through the years too - individuals who just don't "get it" and who claim that all Parthian coins look alike. Fine by me if they feel this way since it means less competition and more Parthians available on the market for you and me.

Nice going. Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks Bob, you have been the one responsible for my enthusiasm. Not too long ago my interest in them wasn't much, but now the more I learn about them and the role the empire played in history the more I want to collect as many as I can. I still need to get a copy of Sellwood, when I can afford it, but for the moment I want the coins before the book.
