Anyone have a clue what the year is on this coin? Also what do you suppose happened to it?

Looks like 1983 to me. looks like it took a hit at some point so PMD (post mint damage). No added value.

It looks like it got hit against something; you can also see were the rim is damaged just below the 2. Petty sure it is 1982-D Large Date. Sorry just PMD.

My scale shows just over 3 grams. So I hope you're right about the 1983 part. :) Would be a great find!

I agree it is likely 1982 D. One can hope. I am not big on values, more about the passion. Thanks for the quick replies as well.

Your welcome. That's definitely overweight for that cent. I think that's over U.S. Mint tolerance.

It looks like a 1982-D Large Date to me. I believe Mint tolerance is 0.13g so 3.21g is on the heavy side but, within the limits for a copper cent.
